Re: Touch Typing.
Touch typing............ your education is sadly lacking Brian, it is what you do to the girls when passing through the typing pool when on your way to collect the ship's mail

Re: Touch Typing.
#13, Brian a touch typist is someone who can type without looking at the keyboard and because they are faster were always highly sought in secretarial posts. The late Scottish actress Molly Weir, holds the world record for being able to type 132 words per minute her colleagues nicknamed her "the Flying Scotswoman" for her 300 words-per-minute shorthand, she won the title of British shorthand and typing champion. I read this over forty years ago so the record may have changed.

Re: Touch Typing.
#16, I only ever managed 16 words per minute Brian that's why I always remembered Molly's record, she was quite a character

Re: Touch Typing.
A very long time ago I took my touch typing test on an Imperial typewriter which had a special cover fitted over the keyboard. Before the test and being comfortably seated I was given a typed letter to read, this in turn was placed in a position in front of the typewriter. All that was required of me was to type the wording of that letter as fast as possible within the time allowed for the test. When my time was up the clerical officer i/c then withdrew and perused the letter which i had just typed. After a couple of tense minutes he told me I had passed the test and the rest of the course. If I remember correctly, to gain an average pass mark, one had to type between 28 and 45 wpm. I think you were allowed 3 mistakes which could either be spelling or bad spacing. If lots of copies were required of certain letters they were typed on skins and then copies were run off on a duplicating machine.
So there we have it, anyway there's nothing wrong with a good bit of barrack room banter, it's good for the memory.
FOURO.
