Re: The Romanians Are Coming.
Hi shipmates, Free travel for work goes both ways we have many thousands of young people working in the E.U in high payed jobs. The workers who come here are mostly low end workers unskilled who take the started job from our unskilled young people. , There Not enough skilled ones from the E.U. better wages are paid in home country . Many top firms in the U.K. who need top skilled workers at all levels. have to go abroad to places like India, to find the right skills and pay top money ....

Re: The Romanians Are Coming.
Good on you Taff Jenkins, Yes sir life is so unpredictable we are at the mercy of who ever runs the so called ruling class.
Its pretty hard to explain humble beginnings and also the way you treat you fellow man even after achieving some dizzy heights, of which i found terribly difficult. As long as that terrible white line is there there will be nothing different. i had cardboard in my shoes, was the only one who didnt serve as an Apprentice in the Exam rooms.
My dads name is up on Tower hill thats all that matters. I went tramping afterwards the Mate was a Geordie, he would have settled for fish and chips every nite, the main thing was he came from nothing too.
Putting people out of work doesnt have to happen, Try asking those on huge salarys to walk, no its the power.
Do you think any Bank executive is worth Two million salary, that like buying a suit for a thousand Dollars.
Somewhere along the line the Western World lost touch, they never bothered to think about the people they loaded the cargo,s from.
This Holden Car Closure they could have fixed that in (Two Minutes) Instruct all Govt departments councils included to buy Australian Cars.
Even Abbott the Rabbit has yes you guessed it bought a Foreign car, wow now isnt he a prime example of what he thinks of the Working class. have a good one taff If i were a skipper youd be in my shout . Glenn

Re: The Romanians Are Coming.
glen I feel sad when I read your last letter on the site .....there must be many on the site who had no shoes to put cardboard in......and very few who didn't come from humble beginings.......but many now who have accomplished great things and fought much greater adversity......how many never reached officer status but would have wished to.......as for the mate who would have settled for fish and chips every night .....I would have bloody loved it........your statement the mate came from nothing whats that got to do with anything .......we all on this site came naked into the world .....we are governed not by governments but by our own capabilities and good ;....or bad fortune governments come and go .....we battle on......I have good and bad times in my life but never blamed anyone for my situation........a man on the site made a comment to me about my 6 years sea time......did I get above deck boy I was galley boy asst cook .......12to 4 watch on a proper tramp in the 50s .......2nd steward .......but never in my life blamed any one else for my situation ....any bad times in my life ie prison in oz......have been my own fault ......as for holden cars if they cant compete tough tittyyes times can be hard but inour lifetime theybhave been harder ......ask others on the site.......when you were mate on considerably more than the deck boy did you give it up .........cos if you were a banker on 1 million a year would you give that up,,,,,,,,,in a pigs eye ......respects to your fathers name on the tower.......but in all honesty loosen up man its xmas

Re: The Romanians Are Coming.
I go along with that Brian . We had Governments here nationalising industries , all that did was fuel the militant's fires , from the Coal strike call immediately after nationalisation to the scandal that was British Leyland , Life is not fair , with millionaire bankers and speculators and the general guys on a six pound an hour minimum . Those that climbed the slopes did so out of pure grit , people like Alan Sugar , but for one Alan Sugar there are ten thousand still running a get by business ,or , they did it through education , people like Prescott and many of the cronies climbed through Ruskin College . Old fashioned car giants are dead , they were killed by the management and labour practices years ago ,What we need to do is educate , the Worlds Nouveaux Riche will come from China and India , because they see education as the base to build empires on , Our own boats are scrapped , if we don't switch on to educational needs our grandchildren will be on £6 an hour working for Mr Wong or Mr Sheik

Re: The Romanians Are Coming.
When I did my Diploma in Management Studies at Coventry Technical College, one of the lectures was sponsored by the Union (can't remember which one). His attitude was why should I teach you lot, your potential managers an therefore the enemy, this was in the early seventies.
He used to just sit and stare at us, he got his money for old rope.
As the year end was nearing and the final exams were looming we asked him for areas in which to study, he was reluctant to advise use.
There was about 8 of is in the class and we ganged up on him, threatening him if he didn't advise us on which areas to study we would report him for lack of effort and that his educational career would be over.
He agreed, and gave us a list of areas to study, we all passed no thanks to him.
But that was the Union attitude in the sixties and seventies.

Re: The Romanians Are Coming.
Vic & then they too went on to university getting degree, even one or two becoming Rhodes Scholars though sadly still had the attitude of your time. Then of course those lot went into politics & on retirement or being voted out showed everyone how to become multi millionaires within a couple of years...ditched their original wives, living the life of Riley supping on the cavair sipping the French Champaign, go figure (: Is the world a... about face, or is it their a... is in our faces ):

Re: The Romanians Are Coming.
Sad but very true Richard , I have the feeling that once they have made it , they seem to haul the ladder up so making it harder for others to get there , When you look at the Ruskin college graduates that were the Union Man , Ruskin college degree , Safe Parliamentary seat sponsored by the Union , Pop Stars , Television Soap actors , Footballers , all when they reach their heights of Fame and Fortune , they stop eating Fish and Chips , with a brown ale , and eat caviare and Lobster with Champagne , something goes click in their heads and they forget their roots . They will be at a charity as a superstar but never donate a penny of their cash , Greed has a habit of creating more greed
