Anyone remember that jingle "The Cossacks are coming Hurrah Hurrah". I have recollections of about 1944 going to see a display of horse riding by supposedly Cossack riders. Were there ever any records of Cossacks being attached to the British Military during the last war? John S.

Hello John (Sabourn)....re your #82 (concerning the Cossacks).

Unfortunately, I can find nothing to confirm that Cossacks fought with British Forces during WWII. However, contrary to what you may have hoped, there is evidence that some Cossack elements provided support to the German Army on the Russian front. To the uninformed, this may seem like the very height of treachery, however, unbiassed students of Russian history might find those same Cossacks had deep-rooted cause for their actions. During the Russian Revolution most Cossacks had supported the Tsar, but in the short-lived Russian Civil War that followed, Cossacks found themselves divided. Many were sympathetic to the anti-Bolshevik White Army whilst others gave allegiance to the Red Army. As a consequence of this, during 1919-20, the Bolsheviks slaughtered 200,000 - 500,000 Cossack men, women and children. Those they didn't kill, they deported to the back of nowhere. With that in mind, it is not surprising that some Cossacks developed a great hatred for Joe Stalin and his Russian Communists. Accordingly, when the opportunity arrived, certain Cossack elements saw the Germans as allies against the Red Army who they despised. Unsurprisingly, at war's end, any pro-German Cossack forces falling into the hands of the U.S. or British Forces were handed over to the Red Army to face certain death. Stalin was not known for his unforgiving nature and as Cappy reminds us (and history records), Hitler's Cossacks met the same fate as their brethren 25 years earlier.

It has occurred to me, John....... there is the possibility the 'Cossacks' of your childhood memory may have been part of a Russian group sent to the U.K. during the war to garner the 'good will' and support of the British public. This sort of thing was not unheard of, even then, and later 'winning the hearts and minds of the people' became a common part of any U.S. Military campaign. During '39 - 40, we British were not averse to sending groups of our own to the U.S. in our endeavour to win the sympathy and support of the American public, however, I don't think they took horses with them or danced anything more energetic than the fox-trot.

#85... Roger have just started reading a book by James Michener (Heavy going) called Alaska. Am only in the early chapters and don't know if will ever finish. Get the impression that most Cossacks were from the Ukraine however, whether true or not or is just there to make the book interesting wouldn't know. Surprising James Cook was also in that part of the world at one time. Maybe others have read this book in the past. If he has researched the book to what is claimed it just shows how little we really know about our own History, never mind Russian, Eskimo etc. I do give some of these authors credit for doing an excellent job if their research is anywhere near accurate. I see that Farage is campaining to get Syrian Refugees into Britain.
What the hell for, Is he as Mad as all the other Pollies?.
These Refugees are mulim and from a war started by mulims, Backed, financed, trained and weaponed by Saudi Whahabis. SO Why not send them to Saudi, their own religion, their own mosques and with the very people who started all the problems.
Britain has already given £550,000,000 in aid to them and still nothing to show for it.

After all my support for UKIP yesterday,I must admit to throwing my hands up in despair,although in mitigation he does say that victims of war refugees like Syrians are a far different case than economic migrants.I'm sure Nigel will wangle himself out of this particular 'statement'.
