Re: queens new years honours list
Remember this quote when someone asked a certain person 'Who do want to win the world cup' replied 'Anybody but the English' didn't stop him accepting a knighthood from the Queen of the country he despised, and no he didn't say it in a jocular manner

Re: queens new years honours list
In the right context, post-nominals provide a first indication of someone's background and achievements. (Caution does need to be exercised though, since some of them can be bought very easily. It's not difficult to check them out.) Like thousands of others of my generation I went to sea at 16 and so missed out on the traditional uni route. Never regretted it for a moment. Took up academic work firstly with the OU - a fantastic institution. Quite proud of the ones I've acquired over the years and I don't see that as a particulalry heinous sin. The opportunity is there for everyone if they want to study or apply for Membership of an Institute.

Re: queens new years honours list
#31, For the sake of clarity to our overseas members the now infamous quote re Andy Murray has yet again been taken out of context. if you read the transcript of the radio programme that Tim Henman and Andy Murray were taking part in it would prove that it was friendly banter between Tim Henman, his English predecessor at the summit of UK tennis..... This is what Tim Henman had to say on the matter.
"Andy Murray anti-English myth debunked by Tim Henman"
Uploaded on 9 Sep 2008
Tim Henman debunks the myth about Andy Murray being anti-English and describes the light-hearted interview with himself, Murray and journalist Des Kelly in 2006 which gave rise to the accusations. Comments made in jest during that interview were subsequently taken out of context by journalists such as Richard Littlejohn (Daily Mail) and Tony Parsons (Daily Mirror) to create the impression that Murray is anti-English.
“I’ll tell you exactly how that happened. We were doing an interview together – sort of the old and the new – and we were walking with a journalist to where he had set up with a photographer.
“On the way I was asking Andy what he was doing after Wimbledon and it was a World Cup year, so I started giving him stick about how Scotland never qualify for anything.“We were bantering so I’m giving it, ‘You don’t qualify for the World Cup or European Championships, your rugby’s not very good, you don’t play cricket and at the Olympics it’s Great Britain.’
“We were laughing and the journalist was laughing so we both said to Andy, ‘Who are you going to support?’ And Andy was like, ‘I couldn’t give a monkey’s, I’ll support anyone that’s playing England.’“It was very funny, we were laughing and it was the obvious answer – the right answer.“So then we sat down for an hour doing a recorded interview when we didn’t speak about England, Scotland or football once.“The next day the headline is Andy Murray: I’ll Support Anyone That’s Playing England. At 18 or 19 years old that was unfortunate for Andy because he was labelled with that.”

Yes Cappy Doddy has waited a long time for this to come about and he is highly delighted that his Knighthood has now been granted. His name was put forward year after year by the people of Liverpool only tobe knocked back,as he said he thought that he was blacklisted for life.People may not realise that there is such a place as Knotty Ash where he says the Diddy Men work down the jam butty mines. My office was in Knotty Ash right opposite was the Knotty Ash pub where I used to have a pint, the other end of the road that the pub was on was Kens house.

#31. Such a sensitive soul Ivan.
Remember all the past champions, If English, he/ she won it for England. If any of the three home countries it was always the UK they had won it for.

Re: queens new years honours list
marion that is a different view to the one given by the news in general .....murray is a true giant in his field the hours spent building up to his success.would be phenominal.....all credit it to him ......but a smile instead of the constipated look on his face would endear him to many more ...a true dour scot .......no insult intended just as i see it .....but then he has his mother to contend with no doubt .....now that would be a problem in anyones world .....regards cappy

#36 that may be the case in that instance Marian, but he also uttered those words in a TV interview, but no matter I still think he deserves all credit for his hard work and dedication to his chosen sport
