ref 68 John, I was also born war time, dimly remember the doodle bugs, and being flung under the stairs a bit quick, When i went to sea in 1958, a large amount of the guys were war service MN, and yet spoke very little about their experiences most were heavy drinkers, understandable. The one i always remember was Tommy O,driscoll, a proper old scouser, brilliant when we were at sea, but mostly unconscious as soon as we hit port. When tanked up he would pull his shirt up, to show a big scar across his chest, which had removed one tit, and used to say, the bloody Germans have got the other one. He had been awarded the croix de gurre (spelling) for downing a German fighter with a machine gun on a mine sweeping vessel, kt

The Donkey man on ORARI was in his late forties he was a nice enough bloke but very quiet, his cabin was opposite mine and when it was hot we left the doors open and you cold see a bottle of whiskey and a glass by his bunk at any time, I can't
remember seeing him obviously drunk but you always knew he'd had enough, anyway he collapsed one day and was taken ashore in Auckland we were told later he had alcoholic poisoning and he was paid off, He was the right age to have been
through the war, who knows what his experiences were? there were probably loads like him still around when we were starting out. JF

With luck the younger generation may just learn something from this.
