Quiet agree Lewis, prevention is better than the cure. Will just have to grit the teeth and take the medicine. JWS

    JWS re #51.

My diagnosis was by a country doctor (G.P.) in Yorkshire who give to to my evacuation family and they passed it on. I doubt if there was treatment or lessons out side of major cities at that time and then the numbers of childhood stutterers would have been astronomical. Like you a lot of the correction was self imposed as I grew, but with aid from school teachers and friend's moms and such. And you are correct, unless one has had it they can not begin to understand the frustration and self-pointed anger at not being able to swiftly express oneself or answer a question. Even a best friend would try to ask a question where the answer required a load of Ps and Bs...kids can be cruel.

As for public speaking, forgetaboutit! Once I had to give lectures on Accounting to a society of accountants. I died a thousand deaths for a week building up to my presentation. Another time I had to introduce the head table at a business convention dinner and froze and forgot my ex-wife's name. Wished I could forget it now.

I was never evacuated from the London area. In. Fact was an out patient at Great Ormond Street hospital , not for stuttering as that started after the war ended but for a foot problem. I was that bad that I used to write on a piece of paper when sent for a message and used to hand to shopkeeper. Yet I managed to conceal the impediment from my parents. Just kept my mouth shut and spoke very little. If had to talk once one got the first word out was ok and not too bad, that first word was the hard one. If got into a row with anyone tended to swing first and talk later if still could. After leaving school at 15 wasn't too bad think I had got the better of it. Cheers JWS.

Many of us went through the war and had all manner of experiences. I was born in the middle of it all but the stories from family still sty in my mind and I can imagine some of the horrors of the bombing and other events.
It was a time no man wants to go though again, but for those who did go though the last are more than welcome in my mind to tell all they remember.
With luck the younger generation may just learn something from this.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Upon leaving the E.U. and its Common Fisheries Policy the U.K. will regain control of Fishing for a distance of up to 200 miles off our coast line or up to either the median line (English Channel) or to where the border between the U.k. and another country lies.
Revoking the London Convention is the first stage in regain control over our waters and will mean that WE control fish management and stock levels, not some Brussels Eurocrates . It will also allow us to ban foreign fishing vessels from fishing in our waters which happens at present. Anyone who has done a voyage down the Chanel and up the St. Georges Chanel to, say Liverpool, would realise that virtually every fishing boat you encountered was either Belgium, French or Spanish registered.

hi john thanks for your imput, but I was aware of the treaty etc, also heard Gove on Andrew mart show on sunday, No what I see as a problem is the European boat owners whom have bought out british boats for their quotas and they whilst residing on the continent will be british fishing boat owners with the added bonus of when we quit Europe their fishing quota is likely to be larger than it is now.
