Going ashore gear was always clean, scrubbed jeans , white short sleeved tee shirt and polished shoes in the warmer climes coupled with a sh*t, shower and shave.
Then in the sixties it was bell bottom loons, tie dyed tees and Cuban heeled boats along with the afore mentioned sh*t, shower and shave but now in addition liberal applications of OLD SPICE or BRUT aftershave (both stung like hell).
If you were lucky to have visited the States or Canada you would have most likely purchased a pair of Khaki drill trousers and Fruit of the Loom tees, just to be different.
Boy did we not think we were the bees knees and did the girls get attracted to us by our immaculate dress or was it the wad of cash stashed in our pockets that attracted them, along with our witty repartee?
Nowadays I reckon you would be hard pressed to recognise a seaman ashore as they all dress alike, hoodies and sweats coupled with nike trainers and lashings of aftershave that make them smell more like a department stores perfume counter than jolly jack tar ashore.

Those Kharky Denims got me beat up and in the Stockade in Jacksonville. FLA.
I went ashore Saturday afternoon, into JC Penny`s Store, they were selling American Army surplus. good gear.
They still had the military badges on and stripes. The Sales Clerk said they were popular amongst the Vets who liked to buy their old outfits shirts with the badges.
I got fixed up, looked real smart. Binned my worn out dungarees and shirt and went down town to the Flamingo Bar.
There was a very beautiful Puerto Rican Barmaid and she made the best Rums ever, By early evening I was legless.
I was supposed to meet the rest of the crowd in another bar somewhere, so I staggered out into the night.
Two Army Military Police were almost up to the bar door as I staggered out, `Come here Boy` they shouted, I legged it across an intersection , jumping over car hoods[ bonnets] and then fell flat on my face, They jumped me and hammered me with their clubs. `I`m a Limy , `I`m a Limy` I was shouting, `Yeah we have heard that before Mac`, and continued beating me with clubs, blood streaming down my face. A jeep appeared I was thrown in and taken away , they dragged me out and threw me into a big cage full of Amercan Soldiers in various states.
After a while I was taken out and was searched, empty pockets and they found my shore pass off the Manchester Merchant. `Jeez this guy really is a Limy,`. They took me to the sick Bay and I had a few stitches in my head and my shirt sponged down and then they put me in the Jeep and took me back to the Flamingo Bar I wanted to go back to the ship No you stay here , they said, We are off Duty at midnight. and we will come back for you. `I said what for , to beat me up again?, No you stay here, the told the Barmaid all my drinks were on them, anything I wanted.
I just wanted to go back to the ship and lie down, I was hurting.
I had a couple of more Rums to kill the pain , They turned up again at Midnight and took me to a Restaurant and a big Steak dinner, I didnt want it, they just said Enjoy. I eat it, not in the mood for anything. Then they run me back to the ship, and appologised again.
I never bought Khaki Denims again.
    Cheers
    Brian.

    John,

You forgot the blue or beige Wrangler Jeans from Curacao or the States.
Also, no self respecting young lad would be seen dead without the Leather Boots and Black Leather jacket from BA. That is of course had he been there. £1.00.00p (Old money, very old money nowadays) each item.

A wad of cash stuffed in our pockets!!!I dont think many of us would remember that. What we would remember is " £3.00 in one hand and your cock in the other looking for a love job".

Sounds more familiar Jim, but down WCSA it was a bar of Yardleys soap and the other in your hand
