Guys if you go back and re-read my posting I think you will agree that I was not arguing for either port. What I was doing was speculating that its doubtful that Mr & Mrs Average will care one way or the other. As we all know the general public knows little of if any about the merchant navy or its heritage and in most cases care even less. Don't believe me? ~ read the 1000s of posts on this forum about this very topic.
As for traveling and hotel stays in fairness there are almost definitely an equal number who cruise from the south as there are from the north. In an ideal situation you would have one point in Scotland, one in Liverpool and one in Southampton thus satisfying everyone. However that's not going to happen. Therefore it stands to reason that those on the south coast are going to be just as peed off with traveling as those in the north. But lets be fair gentlemen, traveling is all part of the experience.
The one point I will concede is that anyone with an interest in the MN tradition of the UK would probably get more benefit out of visiting Liverpool, assuming they have time to take in the sights. As I previously stated I have no allegiance either way. If I did it would be a toss up between the two as I was born and bred within 60 miles of Southampton and haven't even been to Liverpool except one day trip about 30 years ago. Since I have no intention of cruising it will not affect me. That said I wish Liverpool every success and hope that it does provide the city with the economic benefits it deserves.
n.b. My original post was a victim of this morning's hacking and consequently, among others deleted. However Jim Brady copied and pasted it into his post.

A second port is always a good thing. Here in Oz most of the cruise ships sail from Sydney, great if you live in NSW. But for the rest of us it means a flight to get there. Princess do run 8 from Melbourne to NZ during the summer but that is all.

Happy daze John in Oz.

Perhaps, as you say, the Beautiful Game may well be a leveller when the Saints come marching up next season to face Red or Blue (Red myself), i hear they're looking for a new midfielder so maybe Joey will be engaged to come and beat us all up.

John I hope your two teams will take it easy on them Saints next season, after all they are managed by one of your own. from Bootle, I do believe. Good luck to all, weather on the Football Field or the Cruise Ships

friendly rivalry
your comments noted George. We will, of course, welcome your newly promoted team to our stadia for the coming season, although we don't take prisoners. While you're here why not visit our new Ocean Terminal-- i'm sure there'll be no shortage of volunteers to escort you and your fellow fans to view the other delights of Merseyside. Incidentally, Saints new manager Nigel Adkins, does not hail from Bootle as you suggested, but from 'over the water' in Birkenhead.
