That's more or less how I remember it. There was a small 'jigger' (half a dozen houses) behind the Cottage called Townsend Terrace.

I can't be sure but I think, only think, that one of my old "Girlfriends" used to have the odd Bevvie in the pubs nearby,
Maggie was her name, has anyone heard of her ? A great girl but she has'nt given me the £5 back that I lent her in the very early '60s

I find old railways and maps very interesting.

On THIS MAP you can see one of the LMS(red lines)-later it was the LNWR- coming down at a steep gradient from Edge Hill to Waterloo (LMS Goods Station ) via two tunnels - Wapping Tunnel and Victoria Tunnel -under both the Lancashire & Yorkshire (blue lines) from Liverpool Exchange to Southport line and the parallel spur to the L & Y Goods Station.(Great Howard Street Goods)

Interestingly the through Boat Trains to and from U.K. destinations would use this tunnel down from Edge Hill (so avoiding having to terminate/transfer passengers at Lime Street) in order to get to Riverside Station. Riverside was accessed via the Waterloo Goods Station and then reached by using the rails of MDHB Dock Railway.

Thanks for that Gulliver that map shows what I was saying.It's the high coal berth at the Bramley Moor so the railway did run across the dock road and deliver coal from the top of the dock shed.Just been having a pint with a guy who was a bricklayer for the Dock Board he said they used to go to that berth to buy heavy type lumberjack shirts from the Polish seaman that were always docked there taking coal back to Poland.Also lets not forget that all those tugs on the river were coal burners so where did their coal come from.this guy said the coal was dropped from the top right into the tug bunker.It's funny you know how we took things for granted and thought that they would be there for evermore and never observed what was going on,now we wish that we would've observed thing more.
