I didn't know Harrys second name John but I know he went on to have a pub in Manchester after the Runcorn. I ran to Wapping basin just across the road for two years 1961/63 on the "Somme" on the Rouen/Paris trade so yes, it was in the early 60's. Did you know Harry then?.

I was down by Brunswick Dock a few years back, and the Seven Steps, more properly titled the Brunswick Tavern when I used to sail out of the south end, was still there, though sadly not a pub any more but a photo studio or some such.
Has it really gone?


Edit - I've just been looking at Google Earth, and unless I'm totally effed up (not impossible) then Dimensions House, Sefton Street is the old Seven Steps pub.

I knew Harry in the early to mid 60's. If it is the same guy, before the Runcorn he was the landlord of the the Blue House opposite Goodison Park (I don't remember the proper name of the pub). We used to all meet in there when we were on leave and have a few pints before the match. Great days.

I watched the Flat Iron being demolished one Sunday with a wire through one side and coming out of the other moored to a lorry and then Heaven the whole corner collapsed. It must have been around 1974 give or take ten years.
I used to drink in there as I was always staying in Chester Street just around the corner from Upper Stanhope Street in the 50s, I took my two young sons 6 to 8 years old on their weekly trip to New York. and just happened to be there as it came down.

I would take them on the Woodchurch Ferry to Birkenhead and tell them they were on Cunard boat , run up the exit ramp and down the other and reboard. and go back to Liverpool and then home.

Remember the Flat Iron well Bill having been brought up in the Dingle. Had a mate who lived in Dorrit Street and used to meet up in the Flat Iron for a couple of pints before hitting the city.
