Brian, we all have our dreams and memories of times past. Times that for us were great, but sadly the world is changing and not always for the best. The new generations do not have the same values we had in our youth. I doubt many will experience the comradeship we knew or see some of the sites we did. For many the flag, be it national or other, will not hold the same meaning as it does for us. In the part of the third world where you currently live, Bolton, do they have any allligence to the Union Flag, or do they still prefer the falg of the country thay came from?

Happy daze John in Oz.
Life is too short to blend in.

Changing flags
R235941 Good bye Red Ensign- The Queens have deserted you; I wonder what Commodore Sir Edgar Britten would had thought;I read somewhere that the reason was the missing out on cruise ships marriages; what a cover story.PO Ferries in Hull have announced they will flag out their ships Pride of Hull and Pride of York operating from Hull to the continent but they admit it is to save money on crews wages should the present government bring in new labour laws.Wonder if the rest of the PO ships will change flag; both these companies would in an emergency expect the Royal NAVY to protect their ships but I am not sure what would be available when the present government finishes their cut down programme.Gone are the days when the Red ENSIGN was respected and we were proud to sail under such flag.

Arthur
See post 51 on this heading. John Prescott has not replied yet, neither has Prince Charles, but I'll give them another week before sending off a reminder.

Dear Mr Cloherty
Thank you for your letter about the re-flagging of Cunard and P & O.
I was the one that encouraged the Cunard to bring the Queens back to this country and to register them under the British flag in which the British fleet went from 2m tons to today's 80m tons. I was not aware of the transfer of the Queens to the Bermuda flag. Quite contrary to the promises made of bringing them back to the British flag for certain advantages under the tonnage tax. I don't believe the reasons given and I am now entering into discussions with Cunard shipping which involves P & O ships as well.
Since they now admit that it will still be the Royal Navy expected to protect these ships if attacked by pirates and since we have a responsibility for defence and foreign policy for the British dependency of Bermuda, a flag of convenience country, no doubt it will be our Royal Navy and forces expected to protect citizens on the Queens and not a Bermudian aircraft carrier!
I will continue to fight about this as I have all my life in Parliament.
Yours sincerely
John Prescott
Rt Hon Lord Prescott

There it is word for word, typed as received including apostrophes and capitals so we know it is genuine. But that aside he is fighting our corner and he has had the courtesy to reply for which I sincerely thank him.
