Cost-cutting drive sees bailed-out bank's staff warned: 'no staff entertainment for the rest of the year'

Christmas parties have been cancelled for the 17,000 investment bankers at the bailed-out Royal Bank of Scotland as part of a drive to cut costs, after a downturn in business caused by the turmoil in the eurozone.

    Keith and Shipmates,

Please correct me if I'm wrong about this (as I know someone will). I share the views held by many that for far too long bankers and their ilk have continued to award themselves 'obscene' salaries and bonuses in an everlasting attempt to satisfy an insatiable greed, even when their business practice has been less than efficient. It beggars belief that they should continue in this fashion, whilst the community in general are asked to tighten belts and accept a reduced quality of life, increased unemployment and a falling standard in public services and utilities. Is it any wonder that we, the common man, should hold them in such contempt?. That bankers were to be the intended participants in those outrageous Xmas parties only serves to fuel our anger. Now we learn that the R.B.S. are taking steps to reduce some of their former 'perks', but that should be seen for what it is - a public relations exercise, an attempt to win the hearts and minds of the people Oh! Roger you cynic.
Having said all that, however, I fail to see the point in continuing to fuel our displeasure towards the Banking fraternity at this particular time. Why distract ourselves? I don't believe they were the prime movers of the Tower Hill fiasco at all, but simply the highly prized 'target' of a commercial enterprise. Surely, we should continue to direct our concerns elsewhere, where it really matters, until such time as we achieve a satisfactory outcome in this matter.

    .....regards, Roger.

Personally I agree with Roger. This thread has inadvertently become corrupted by a general free for all against the bankers. The original intention of highlighting the disgraceful intentions of Moving Media and Trinity House to allow the Tower Hill Memorial to be used as an entertainment venue. Just for once the bankers were innocent bystanders in this fiasco. Our campaign assisted in getting Moving Media's intentions stopped and we proceeded to seek answers and assurances from Trinity House who were the actual villains of the peace in this episode. As I understand it, Ivan's letter has yet to be answered. Let us keep this thread on track and use it for information directly regarding its original intention.

Those for whom the memorial is intended had no conception of modern day bankers but would have been aware of Trinity House. We owe it to their memory to to pursue our original intentions on their behalf.

I can only echo what has been said about keeping the thread on track. Its Moving Venue and Trinity House whom we should be watching, especially following that remark from Moving Venue that they still might be opening the site after the dispute has been settled. As far as I am concerned ' they wont be ' and I will fight for as long as it takes to stop them.

    Chris.
Just to let everyone know that I have today just received a reply from Rear Admiral Sir Jeremy de Halpert of Trinity House.

As a matter of courtesy I have sent it to Brian to read first as he sanctioned the use of his site as a reference point, I have asked Brian to post it on site when he has had chance to read it.

I will refrain from making any comments about the contents of the letter until such time the letter is posted on site. I have made my comments known to Brian, and if he wishes to post those comments along with the letter, then of course I have no objection.

    Regards Ivan

Default I think the thread is on track:

E.mails received today included: "forwarded the e-mail below and attachment, which was forwarded to him. I thought you might be interested in the newspaper cutting. Is there no shame with these people" ?? and: "Hopefully we can all let our contempt of this known in good time to stop it even starting".

The mail was only opened today and was sent at the time, I was actually away and missed this.

What is important is the fact all has been halted, but no real explanation has been given for the very thought initially raising it's ugly head.

Moving Venues blamed the press and media, so had it not been for the papers etc, this would have gone ahead ? They also announce those that had booked have been contacted all rearranged, some had already booked ?

Reports are of cancelled for now and possibly going ahead next year ?

Trinity seems not to have released anything yet:

Seems the PR people are well happy that all seems to have blown over:

I do agree that the bankers alone should not be knocked, but that was the press angle and it did bring all to our attention.

I will update any news items that I find that have some relevance, it is important that we do not also seem content with the situation.

I feel that much will be swept under the carpet unless we keep this alive and am generally not adding my own views but media reports. The RBS release was on the 14th of October, well in the midst of the row, PR teams are working over time to attempt to show that they are not connected.

So many bodies have worked to ensure this plan would fail, so many answers have not been given, it is to early to sit on laurels, it is important to ensure no one ever thinks this way again and I attempt to add anything related from the media to the forum, that all can be either informed by or discuss: This post does contain some of my own views:

It is only with explanations, answerers and promises that we may lower the guard.

These may come, until then we must keep on top of all and not let those that may differ, take the upper hand.

While we sit back and wait, they will be planning:

Off My Soap Box, expecting differing views and reply, but this is dear to me and many others that I am in contact with that request more info on what is now occurring: I can tell them only that we are waiting, no news, could be good news ?

Default Wave of emotion for memories of sailors:

THE now-abandoned proposal to hold city bankers’ parties in the garden of the Tower Hill Merchant Navy memorial, in London, incensed a number of readers.

Little wonder, as it stirred memories of loved ones whose names appear on the tablets.

I think the problem may be that Brian is trying to post the letter I received from Trinity House, which I sent in PDF formatt, he is not having a lot of success, so have sent it as a jpeg, if this doesn't work. I'll type it out direct to site. Afraid my knowledge of computer use is as a glorified typewriter, its other uses as a benefit to mankind I am not au-fait with
