I was engineering Manager of a 5 acre site for many years , the landlord sold it to developer who intended to put 180 dwellings on it , the site was on a designated "Red Flood Plain " I said to the developers Engineer , there was no possibility of the Environment Agency agreeing to planning , he told me they had built on flood plains the length and breadth of the country , We paid a fortune to keep our drains free and flowing with regular cleans , the now demolished site after 23 years free running has flooded twice in four years and four years after the factory was demolished the site lays derelict as the Agency objects to development . I wonder how many of these flood plains have been built over , preventing drainage .When a site built on a flood plain floods , the developer should pay the occupants , why should their greed increase my premiums !

I live on top of a hill, next to me is a small lake 50 feet below street level, which overflows down a waterfall another 500 feet down for half a mile to another lake that overflows into a river over one mile away.
The insurance Company are now charging me £150 a year extra because there is water within 400 metres from my home.
They said `We can see it on google satelite.you have to pay up ,you are at risk of a flood`.
It is impossible. you could pour the Atlantic into it and no flood.

    .
The Enviroment Agency havent got a clue , No dredging, silting up, then flood. No cost to the Agency.
All cost are now borne by the house holders on their insurance charges.
If water can get away there will be no floods.[ unless they are on a flood plain]

#15 Only after 8 pints years ago JP. A quick opening of the non return valve use to relieve the pressure though so as to return to near normal. Cheers John S

I have recently gone onto a water meter and just received my first 6 monthly bill.Water used £120 drainage charge £120 is that just coincidental or do you pay a drainage charge the same as the amount of water that you use?So the water companies are raking in the money for drainage but what are they doing with it.If i remember rightly the gulley sucker belonged to the council and was operated by them, the gulley sucker does still come around from time to time but I'm not sure who operates it.

The effluent or sewage charge should be about 92.5% of the metered water in . Here Southern Water charge £ 00.219p per cubic metre effluent , and Portsmouth Water charge around £ 00.64 er cubic metre for the water supply . To the effluent , there are two additional Charges Surface water and Highway drainage some where around £20.00 a year .

The gulley suckers and road sweeping are done by local council Vehicle in this borough , but most of the surrounding areas use contractors . Southern Water have invested heavily in the infrastructure ( They are a French Company ) to the tens of millions of pounds over the lasts ten years in cleaning up the coast , They had to do it to comply with EU legislation
