The first recorded use of "CQD" by an American ship was in 1908 by the steamer Santa Rosa off the coast of California. Commander Richard Johnstone records this in his memoir My San Francisco Story of the Waterfront and the Wireless, 1965. The first recorded American use of "SOS" was in August of 1909. Wireless operator T. D. Haubner of the SS Arapahoe radioed for help when his ship lost its screw near Diamond Shoals, sometimes called the "Graveyard of the Atlantic." The call was heard by the United Wireless station "HA" at Hatteras.

So i apologise for that error! but still looking for other answers! hahah!

In 1853 The Union Steam Ship company was formed with a fleet fo 5 ships, two largest being only 530 tons. Name any two please.
What was their primary purpose then?
In 1857 the Admiralty invited tenders for the mail service to S.A. The Union company submitted a tender which was accepted in September of that year. On September 15th one of the ships, name please, sailed from Southampton with the first mail to Cape Town.
In 1862 Charles Cayzer joined the British India Steam Navigation company in Bombay. Donald CUrrie founded the Castle line in 1878, Cayzer went into partnership with his friend Irvine and they started Clan Line, which some 78 years later merged with U.C.L.
In 1876 the mail contract was to be shared with Union Steam and Castle Line and the service was then reduced from the inital 42 days to 26 days. Each company taking alternative sailings.
In 1890 the Dunottar Castle of 5,600 tons wa launched and became the largest ship on the cape mail run.
Not to be out done Union Line launched their answer to this ship wth the 6,884 ton Scot with accomodation for 408 passengers.On her maiden voyage she set a new record for the voyage of 14 days, 18 hours 57 minutes. This record stood for almost 40 years until the Stirling Castle beat it in 1936.
In 1900 a new contract for the mail ws to be negotiated but with only one company to run it. The two companies declined to compete and no other tender was submitted. In December 1899 the two companies, Union Steam and castle Line amagamated to become Union Castle Steam Ship company.
By the 50's an average of over 100 sailings a year of the company were handled by Southampton.The company then had a fleet fo 15 passenger ships with a total tonnage of 314,225.
6 of the company ships operated the Round Africa service with 8 on the Cape mail run.
In 1960 the last of 4 Windsor Castles was launched, the previous one have been sunk during the war. In 1961 the Transvall was launched carrying over 700 bloods in one class. These two ships along with the Pendennis replaced the Arundel 1921, Carnarvon 1926 and Winchester 1930 Castles.
Soon gone were stirling 1936, Athlone 1936 and Capetown 1938 to be replaced by Good Hope Castle and Southampton Castle. There was then an amalgamation with Safmarine and the mail run was reduced from 14 to 11.5 days with only 5 ships operating. Windsor, Pendennis, Edinburgh and the Transvall now named S.S. Vall and the Pretoria now named Oranje.
By June 1974 the Windsor had completed 1.4 million nautical miles completeing her 100th voyage.
By January 1976 only two ships remained on the mail run, Windsor and S.A. Vaal. The final voyage of the Windsor began on August 12th 1977 and ended 19 September.Last sailing of the Vall was on September 2nd. This after a 110 year service to the cape.
