I am just posting this as there may be those who have an interest in old Rail Systems etc.
I know (Well if i recall that one is Mike Hall ??)

I myself have always been interested in this Subject ,so am now sharing this Link with you all.

To start System 1 is rather interesting away from mostly Trains to the Harbour etc.

Think we have or should have discussed the below also before:

The SR Merchant Navy class (originally known as the 21C1 class, and later informally known as Bulleid Pacifics, (Spam Cans or Packets), was a class of air-smoothed 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotives designed for the Southern Railway of the United Kingdom by Oliver Bulleid.

The Pacific design was chosen in preference to several others proposed by Bulleid. The first members of the class were constructed during the Second World War, and the last of the 30 locomotives in 1949.

Incorporating a number of new developments in British steam locomotive technology, the design of the Merchant Navy class was among the first to use welding in the construction process; this enabled easier fabrication of components during the austerity of the war and post-war economies. The locomotives featured thermic syphons and Bulleid's innovative, but controversial, chain-driven valve gear.

The class members were named after the Merchant Navy shipping lines involved in the Battle of the Atlantic, and latterly those which used Southampton Docks, a publicity masterstroke by the Southern Railway, which operated Southampton Docks during the period.

Vernon, from memory there were, and may still be, some fantastic train runs across SA.
There wasa a prog on SBS not so long ago about some of them, great stuff.

Only problen nowdats is the high cost of travel. Only for the Rich and Famous so off you go then! LOL

As a schoolboy at that time I was able to tick off 23 of the Merchant Navy class before I joined in July 1953

There is a documentary series here in the U.K. called "walking Britains lost railways" made by Dan Snow, where he walks a number of rail lines that were closed in the Beeching era. A number of these lines are now being opened again in order to improve our transport system, with government backing. I watched the program where the Edinburgh to Carlisle line was walked, it has already been reopened to around its mid way to the Scottish borders and there were some very interesting items, such as the large P.O.W. camp situated along it and the factory that at one time was the biggest supplier of cashmere wool in the world. There is talk of the mid Tyne railway from Newcastle up to the Scottish borders being reopened going through Blyth.

P.s. Dan Snow also did an excellent series on N.Ireland during ww2which had a lot of maritime stuff in it about convoys etc.

Thanks for the post Vernon. How does that song go Trains & Boats & Planes. For most on the site we have used them in the course of our employment. As a boy I grew up with the harbour on one side and the railway on the other so if not watching ship (boats) it was trains at the engine shed. I still collect photos ships and trains of time gone past.
(1) The engine shed Ferryhill around 1966, now nearly all houses (2) A P2 class locomotive built for the Edinburgh - Aberdeen route, at the present time as non were preserved a replicate is being built to be called Prince Charles !

Many ended up in my home town, future being scrap.

As it happened many were actual restored.

John $6, we have had some of that one on TV here in Oz, along with a number of others in similar vein.
Currently one about railway journeys in Scotland, very good until some of the locals get to speak and there are no subtitles.

Liverpool Docks, Was the only one in the world that could boast having 3 working railway companies, The Over head Railway, The M.D.H.B. Railway, And the Edge hill goods yard railway all crossing each others path at some time. Terry.
