I have an ex friend who I sailed with on BP LNG carriers he left and got a cracking job with BP Exploration earned a fortune. He was a second mate with his masters ticket and had been offered his C/Off job before he moved across to BP Expo.
He did a few years with them and then was based in Singapore involved in Single hull tanker convesrsion to FSU's.
He decided he wanted to join the RNR is it? and fullfilled his dream, admirable. Something happened to him though and he is that far up his own ars- and so full of his own self importance it is unbelievable. He did a spell in Afghanastan and to listen to him you would think he was the missing link out there for the UK forces. He went on about how he had joined the Naval Club in London. He would post photos of himself on Face Book in his finery he is a 2&1/2 ringer now so has progressed I suppose. A few of us started to take the micky out of him, light hearted and he got in a right strop saying we were disrepectful to his rank and the Queens Uniform. In the end one by one we told him eff off. Last I heard he was that busy playing Nelson his Mrs buggered of her best friend who by all accounts is a lovely girl.

Lewis as you know I worked with naval saturation divers and found that branch of the navy very similar to the MN was probably the. Scarcity of the bull dust unless there was big brass around. It was the general consensus of opinion amongst the naval ranks that you hadn't got it made in the commissioned ranks until you got the third full stripe and with the commanders rank came the first brass hat. The RNR used to be ex naval personel, the RNVR was the branch of weekend sailors who were not ex RN. Cheers JWS.

My Roots Stem from MacDonald's of Inverness
No wonder I love the Pipes !

Scotland. The MacDonalds were the Lords of the Isles in early Scottish history. Their base was the Western Isles, essentially their own independent fiefdom. They had arrived in Skye from the southern Hebrides in the 1400's. Their home at Armadale castle there still stands. But their independent status ended in 1493 when thet forfeited their title of Lord of the Isles to the Scottish crown.

##17 The present Royal Naval Reserve was formed in 1958 merging the original Royal Naval Reserve (RNR) founded under the Naval Reserve Act in 1859 as a reserve of professional seamen from the merchant service and fishing fleets and the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNVR), a reserve of civilian volunteers founded later in 1903. No mention of only ex RN only, just professional seamen. I guess I was a weekend sailor for 27 years then.

#23... something else learned thanks. Always thought the RNR was part of compulsory part of naval service of serviceman staying in the reserve for so many years on completion of tour. And the RNVR nicknamed the Wavy Navy introduced during last war for mainly civilians with boating knowledge which included merchant seamen. A bit more knowledge, can never stop learning. JWS
