Re: rail unions
This is an interesting string. Have any of the posters read about the 1949 Canadian Seamen's Strike at wfhathewaylabourexhibitcentre.ca Really lengthy missal but there may have not been any strike so confusing overall - unless one was there an involved I guess. I do seem to recall that many Canadian ships took off and registered under another flag so when the strike was over there were less jobs for CN seamen.

Re: rail unions
KEN. The following is an extract from my Kindle book, BACK TO SEA, and I wonder if this is the strike you're referring to.
The London Dock Strike had lasted for four weeks and ended on 25 July(1949). It was caused by the dockers, stevedores and lightermen refusing to discharge two Canadian ships, the Beaverbrae and the Argomont, in support of their crews who were in dispute with the Canadian Pacific Company regarding wages and conditions. When the strike ended, the crew of the Beaverbrae, apart from eight strike leaders, were interviewed individually at the Company's office in Leadenhall Street and offered their jobs back under the same wages and conditions set out in the Articles they had signed. But, because the other members of the crew refused to sail with them, the strike leaders were not reinstated, but repatriated to Canada.

Re: rail unions
Unmanned trains on some of the London underground I am told.
But who can blame companies, and workers, for not wanting to join a union. Problems of the past have seen jobs lost because of strikes, companies going under as a result of union action.
here inn Oz in the 60's about 95% of workers were union, now it is less than 14% and most of those in service jobs such as Police, ambos, fireies etc. The building union is the only other one of any note but no ticket no start, though that will change next year with the new laws.

Happy daze John in Oz.

RMT has a £45m war chest and are currently paying strikers £60 per day strike allowance.

Re: rail unions
Moira Stuart on Radio 2 Breakfast News said that in the Southern Rail dispute "the door is always open for more talks" but who is going to open that door I wonder - the driver or the guard?

Re: rail unions

Some of that money must have belonged to the Seamans Union, NUS.
THEY TOOK IT ALL, AND ALL ITS ASSETS and buildings, .hey are even trying to take over Springbok in Surrey. many railworkers are moving in.
That place was a gift to British Merchant Seamen by the South African Gov, in appreciation of what they did in WW2.
NOW THEY WANT IT FOR THEMSELVES.
So no sympathy for train drivers or guards.
Brian.
