James Logan
Hello,
I really would like a photograph of a merchant navy sea captain who was a skipper from 1874 to about 1900 - are there any sites where there are pics of skippers from the past?
Thanks
Dave

Re: James Logan
Although no promises, there is a greater chance if you have basic details.
Full name, place of birth / death. Any official numbers / discharge etc.
Any thing else at all that would assist finding archive records, parents, siblings,
as Terry has mentioned names of ships etc, anything at all may assist.
Regards,
Keith.

Re: James Logan
No I haven't searched anything like this - a friend searched the Lloyds Captains Registers in the London Metropolitan Archives for me which gave me the details of his ships.
Thanks to Keith at Tregenna and Doc Vernon for your contributions BUT I am a total novice in this area - do I now use your information to aid my search for a photo?
Thanks
Dave

Re: James Logan
Wondered if this is enquiring of the same person ?
James Logan was a Master Mariner (Captain?) for many years at Ayr Harbour from about 1875 to 1900.
I was told there was a photo of him in Ayr Harbour
Anyone know where this photo might be?
Thanks
There appears to be no reply but, could be a good line of enquiry ?
Keith.

Re: James Logan
Unfortunately, that was just me.
Someone had told me they had seen a photo of James with his son John in the Ayr Harbour area but after trying every avenue, I couldn't find the photo - maybe it doesn't even exist.
Thanks
Dave

Re: James Logan
You never know, a few years ago our local Council held an open day,
they dragged up all and sundry from the cellar. Including a portrait of ?
They had no idea who he was !
They had lost both the tag and corresponding details.
It took me a while but I furnished them with the identity
and information. I expect the picture to be back in the cellar
with no tag and the information binned or lost again.
Gordon Love Bastian, GC, MBE (30 March 1902 – November 1987) was an engineering officer in the British Merchant Navy who was awarded the Albert Medal for risking his own life to save other members of the crew of SS Empire Bowman after it was torpedoed on 31 March 1943.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordon_Bastian
Hence you never know, one time researching Newport shipping records, we located them but, could not access
as they were stored in an unsafe part of a building.
Early days for the research team here on site.
Fingers crossed, something may turn up for James Logan ?
Keith.
