One of the nicest places that I ever visited was a little fishing settlement on the East Coast of Newfoundland called ‘Hearts Content’. I was there one summer in command of a small hydrographic survey vessel and having tied up at the jetty for the night my next job was to contact the office in Halifax to give a progress repot. the only way to do this in those days was by land line telephone so I went to the nearest house and requested the use of theirs.
After assuring the lady of the house that the call would be made collect therefore with no cost to them, I was welcomed in and directed to the phone which was in the sitting room. An older man was sitting their and he said to me when I had finished “You are English” I assured him that I was but now also a Canadian. He said “Sit down” and produced a large bottle of rum from a cupboard.
He then told me about his war years as a matelot in the RN (Newfoundland was a British dominion in those days) he spent all of the war years on mine sweepers in the North Sea based on the Tyne, ideal for him as the mine sweepers were wooden fishing boats very familiar to him.
After a few hilarious tales and a decided drop in the bottle’s tide mark he remarked that they were the happiest days of his life.
I staggered back to the ship through the beautiful summer evening and the tranquil settings of this delightful little harbour having just experienced one of the happiest days of my life.

No, the Vikings built a settlement at a place now called “Le anse aux meadows”
It’s much further north than “Hearts Content” and has a very rugged year-round climate, I suppose the Vikings decided to let some crazy Italian discover that load of bull **** far to the south.

Thanks for that Keith, most outside of NZ have never heard of it and no doubt would have also been that way had the cruise ships not gone in there after the demise of Lyttleton harbor after the earthquake.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

    Hi John & Keith
My brother built a batch, [Small NZ beach house} at Akaroa and built himself a yacht which he and his son sailed around the bay and went fishing in. We did a trip over from Christchurch when we lived there , most NZ bays are lovely places, don't know what they are like these days but they used to be very quiet and tranquil. When we lived in NZ ten years ago we used to go to a lovely beach and be the only ones there.
    Cheers Des

The thread is Tranquil Wee places, how often have you had the need to find a Tranquil wee spot.
Out in the bush it is easy, any tree will do, but in the city it is preferable you se the nearest comfort station.
Using trees in the city can provoke looks of astonishment.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

How about Coos Bay in Oregon, met some great people there and in one home had a fur cover on toilet seat, as it was winter.
