Re: Tranquil WEE Places you have visited in MN
someone mentioned ascencion island, I hope you were not looking for beauty there, most of it is just rock sitting up in the sea, the only greenery is up the mountain by a 4 wheel drive truck or land rover, up through the cloud it is all green with catle grazing .

Yes but despite that I loved the place ,not that I spent much time there but what I saw was very interesting!
Cross Hill was not a place to miss with the Cannons there!
Some lovely views from the peak of the Island!
Cheers
Saint Helena too was a lovely place to visit!
Pity that we never had much time when Anchoring out there ,but a quick shore trip was always on the cards!

Shimizu in Japan is my selection, we called there to load frozen salmon which took four or five days. The town was like the Japan of two hundred years ago, no western style clothing to be seen, very few vehicles and quaint little houses of timber and paper. Plus the locals were really friendly !! Ascension Island and St. Helena are very tranquil if a little barren and off the beaten track, but Duneden is still a very quiet place and not somewhere you have to worry about sunburn.

Re: Tranquil WEE Places you have visited in MN
St Helena was a lovely little Island very friendly people, very old fashioned, like going back a couple of hundred years.. just a couple of pubs, BUT when I was there they had just got TV and in the Pub they were watching an American police show like Hawaii 50, and they were amazed at the car chases and shootings.
Now they are going to build an Airport, which means Imported Labour, Tourists, etc, and then the Island will be tranquil no more, It will be destroyed. They call it progress.
The Islands of the South Pacific are very tranquil and peaceful. Most have No Hotels, No Daft Tourists on Ski Boats, no cars, No TV. Just happy people who sing because they appreciate you for taking the trouble to go and visit them.
Islands like Raiatea Rangiroa, Tuomotu, Nuka Hiva, Fanning Island,
Fanning Island is the most primitive,, No electricity, No water, only rain water, No shops, No hotels , no tourists,
No toilets or bathrooms, use the lagoon for a dump. No cars or vehicles, No hospital, no pubs, no beer or spirits, No phones, no mobiles, no computers, They have NOTHING, just fish and coconuts,
But they sang when I got there, they were just happy and didnt know any different.
Going to Fanning Island again next February, taking a load of clothes, T shirts etc for the kids.
Cheers
Brian.

Re: Tranquil WEE Places you have visited in MN
The islanders were very much in favour of the airport Brian , a bit of the detail hjere http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Helena_Airport but at the moment they are a minimum of five days travel to the nearest major hospital , I can see their reasoning , they are looking to life and progress , the sad part comes when the specialist holiday companies build a hotel , then Thompson's start to go there , I love the Azores , but they won't stay exclusive for ever , at the moment they are still off the tourist main tracks
