John,as a proud Mancunian,(although not from the south side) I’m pleased to say the area is vastly improved since those days, and smells much nicer now due to the demise of all those toxic industries, the canal fish population is increasing and modern architectural projects in the old Salford Docks area are transforming the skyline all the time.
The famous ‘Stinkin’ Stocking 'pub ALBERT EDWARD-'Stinkin'Stocking',Eccles.jpg is in reality the Albert Edward (Samuel Smith’s ) their -OBB = £1.80 a pint ),cheapest in Eccles, apparently), in Church Street,Eccles and was so nicknamed in the 40’s and 50’s by the locals indicating the many ladies of easy virtue who frequented it along with their seamen ‘friends’ from the nearby Barton Wharf.
One local wag commented that the pub floor was painted green just to make the cows feel more at home !

If the grass was not that long I can see why the wild life left, bloody nosey motorists.

I don't know about nosey motorists but I recall an incident with very short, nowhere to hide grass. We were on the "Plagiola" tied up in the cut at Abidjan waiting for tugs when a young lady of modest means entered into a transaction with one of our more lunatic crew members. We were already singled up, there were a couple of wives midships hanging on the rail and most of the refinery workers were having their lunch under the shade of a massive tree fifty yards away. The crewman did a runner down the jetty, the girl had a couple of policemen clear the locals from under the tree and he had his jump stone cold sober with about a hundred people looking on before rejoining the boat to a standing ovation.
Apparently this tree had official rights to be used as a knocking shop but I never put it to the test myself. I will only go so far in the name of research. Has anyone else come across these "designated" areas?
Regards
Calvin

There was a fence not far from the Criterion hotel in Point Road Durban, great spot for a knee trembler.

No but the 'young' lady in question was one of those generous ones, loved giving out presents.

6am in the morning , Water Street Kingston Jamaica, staggering back to the Ship after a night in Dorises Bar, drinking Overproof White Rum and enjoying the charms of dusky maidens, me and my mate stopped by 2 young girls, so we obliged in ladies loo, ten Jamaican shillings for both, almost crawl back on all fours, that day we was pulling Pistons from Main Engine, dont know how we did it, then ashore again that night for more,
