Re: Wire splice/Ferrels
The first time I came across square line or octoplait was when it first came out I was working as a rigger
just before the dinner break the manager gave me and another rigger some phamplets telling us how to splice 8 inch squareline,he said study these as you are going to Yarmouth this afternoon to splice some.
We did splice them again simple when you know how,Octo 8 strands 4 left handed lay 4 right handed lay
right follow right,left follow left.
Later on 12 stranded rope was being used.
Regards splicing depending how tight the rope has been made up,slack lay easy tight lay hard.

Here are a few names you might know Ernie Simmo, Albie Wild, Andy Anderson, Tommy and Billy Ledson. Peter.
Ernie Simmo, Certainly the other names ring a few bells, The reason for my enquiry on Dougie Green, I sailed with his son Alan, We became very close friends indeed, Dougie was very well got at the time as you know, Alan got a job on the Mossy Boats which was for the chosen few not suggesting Dougie had anything to do with it
But they where great times dougie drank in the Seaforth Castle when me and Alan where at sea, Every Saturday afternoon you would dread walking into Dougie, He would hand you a bill for about 6 weeks football doubles, Bloody football pools, He was into everything, But a nicer guy you would not meet. His son Alan ended up marrying Sheila Porter, Who know runs the Caradoc for Terry Riley, Sadly Alan passed away at the tender age of 52, I attended his funeral over on the Wirral where he set up home with Sheila and the 5 kids that was about 10 years ago now. Another few names you may remember as you ended up Boatman, Joe Walsh, Jimmy and Ernie Turtin {Obviously} I think Ernie ended up working for M.D.H.B. In some capacity, I sailed with Jimmy Turtin on the Canada he was a great shipmate of my old mans brother Billy Hartly, And I later on sailed with him as Bosun on the Kano Palm, When we drew cards for the watch in the mess room I drew an ace and claimed the 4 2 8 when he asked my name and realised who I was I got on with him like a house on fire, Happy days Peter, A great shame it all came tumbling down Regards Terry.
