largest british ship
I watched the largest British ship come in to the Solent yesterday, 400 metres long, massive. British ship ?, only thing British it seems is the red ensign, French owned company, built abroad, 26 crew, Captain from Eastern Europe, crew from phillipines. If the BBC report was true not one Brit aboard KT

Re: largest british ship
The report said there were 5 more on the stocks i think, and a couple more even larger. She will not go through Panama as she is too big, but built specially for the far Eastern trade. She was on her maiden voyage, but will not be calling in the UK again. As you say Jim, why registered in Britain, there must be some financial advantage i guess, KT

Sad indeed, a once great maritime nation inviting its own strangulation.

Re: largest british ship
Just read about her in the papers, over 1,300 feet long, 177 feet wide and powered by a 9,000 hp engine. Either misprint or she is a tad underpowered.

File Photo: UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency p.s. Jim these ships could be registered in Southampton because of her deep water berth when loaded, Terry.

The largest vessel registered in the UK Ship Register has arrived in Southampton today.
CMA CGM Kerguelen, a 398-meter-long containership operated by the CMA CGM Group, is big enough to pack five and a half A380 Airbuses on. It is capable of carrying 17,772 TEU (twenty feet equivalent units) and is driven by an engine of 9,000 horsepower.
Sir Alan Massey, Chief Executive of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, with responsibility for the UK Ship Register, has been invited to visit the vessel while it is in Southampton. He will be joined by colleagues Gwen Lancaster, Customer Service Manager, and Annette Bowman, Customer Account Manager.
Welcoming Kerguelen onto the UK Ship Register, Massey said the ship is now the largest vessel afloat under the Red Ensign. CMA CGM has 40 vessels and well over three million Gross Tons on the UK Register, making it the register’s largest customer, Massey said. The register expects to add further CMA CGM new builds onto its Flag in the near future.
Delivered in March, CMA CGM Kerguelen was christened May 12 in Le Havre, France, and is the first of six vessels of the same size series that will enter the CMA CGM fleet in 2015

John, I am no expert and I am not googling that lot , but as you and Keith say why register in Britain, Could it be something to do with Southampton's deep water berth, Fully loaded she has some displacement.

Re: largest british ship
Hi RLT, i dont think it was the berth, as the report said she would not be coming to the UK again, working out of the continent, unless the reporter had the wrong info. Still baffles me why she is under the red ensign, the owners are French apparently, KT
