Day of the Seafarer
June 25th has been designated "Day of the Seafarer" to recognise the vital contribution to world trade, industrial growth etc made by seafarers.
The IMO believes that the general public should be made aware of the the contribution that seamen make to their daily lives (some hope : my words) . Seafarers currently operate in excess of 50,000 ships in all oceans, seas and coastal waters, there are currently over 1.25 million Merchant seamen without whom world trade and industrial growth would screech to a halt, but people don't know who they are there, without these unseen men whole populations would freeze to death in the dark, or starve to death because of lack of food.
I shall be writing to my local Press and National Press to try and see if they can bring this special day to the public's attention, I hope some others on here will take up the cudgeal also.
Whilst on the subject of recognition many news bulletins carry remembrance of all the troops who lost their lives in the Falklands on this 30th anniversary (and so they should ) but no mention is made of the 15 Merchant seamen (I have only traced 15 names there may be more) who lost their lives in the conflict. So I hope those who do contact their local or national Press bring this to their attention also.

The Day of the Seafarer:
25 June 2012 marks the second international Day of the Seafarer. On that day, IMO is asking people around the world to use social networks to highlight just how important seafarers are to everyone on the planet, as they transport all over the world those vital items, commodities and components which are so vital to all our daily lives.
So, on 25 June 2012, the Day of the seafarer, we ask you to tell the world, through your social media connections, about an object in your daily life that you can’t live without, and which came by sea. Take a photo, write a description, record a song, make a film, whatever you prefer: and then just post it on the social platform of your choice and add the campaign slogan: “thank you seafarers”.
Seafarers leave their homes and families, often for long periods to ensure that essential items and commodities on which our lives depend arrive safely at our homes.

The local Press printed my letter in full last week, but the National Press concentrated on unmarried mothers, snails and cats, one must admire them for getting their prioroties right
