    Default discharge numbers

Hi, Do hope someone can help me track down some ship's discharge numbers and the ships they refer to. My late grandfather, who I never met, was a steward in the Merchant Navy. I've recently tracked down some discharge numbers. His name was John Leonard Jackson and he was born in Gleaston in Furness. The first number is 118024 dated 27/4/22, 108842- 12/9/22, 119582- 31/12/23, 137466 - 2/1/26 and 957660, don't know that date. Family legend has it that he was torpedoed and in an open boat for some time. Is there anyway I can confirm that? I'd be very grateful for any help. Many thanks.

    Arrow John Leonard Jackson.....

    Hi ‘ giacomin’.
Just adding my collected information to Vernon’s for you.
First, just a bit puzzled as to why you think he was torpedoed,as your ‘timeline’ for this person’s ships is for the interwar years-unless he also served later on ,during WWII?…

I have used Miramar Ship Index and the CLIP lists for my results-and attached a few ship photos from Photoships where appropriate.
Note that Lloyds Register, which someone on site may have access to,may possibly confirm or substantiate these results,so I hope someone will reply.

118024.CLIP says s.s.ALCA of Liverpool, from 1903 when built until 1907,when it left the register. This does not correspond with your grandfather’s date of 1922-so possibly there is an error in transcription of that Official Number of 118024?

    108842. s.s. MANCHESTER IMPORTER (4,028 tons cargo liner).Manchester Liners from 1899-1927.
119582. s.s. MANCHESTER MARINER (4,106 tons cargo liner). Manchester Liners from 1904-1925. MANCHESTER MARINER 1904-1925.jpg
137466 s.s. BLARNEY a small coasting vessel of 423 tons owned by City of Cork SP Co(Coast Lines subsidiary) from 1920-1930
Coastville 1935. Ex- BLARNEY from 1920-1930.jpg

957660 ? May be an error in transcription or in recording this number?

If he served during WWI, then there are no surviving service records for this period to confirm the ship he was torpedoed from. If you are refering to WWII, you would need to access either the Fourth of Fifth Register held at Kew, depending on when he left the Merchant Navy. Copies of the Fourth Register can also be found at Southampton.

    Default discharge numbers

Thanks to all, for your replies.
John Leonard was born in 1870 and he died in 1929. If he were torpedoed it would have to have been in the 1st World War. Haven't been able to find any information about earlier sailings and presumably he was at sea before the turn of the century. Also I found him living in Belfast Northern Ireland from abt 1905 to 1909 then the family returned to Lancashire. if anyone can point me in the right direction to find what he was doing before and during WW1 i'd be most grateful.
    Regards, giacomin
