[QUOTE=happy daze john in oz;237495]A letter was published in the Sunday paper and I thought some of you, including my good friend Gulliver, would be interested.

'I keep reading of Britain's influence in the world as a result of Britex will decrease, but that is not what I have seen on my recent travels through Europe ......QUOTE]

I always knew that John,in fact I've been a confirmed Brexiteer since before Nigel Farage was born !

It's a pity that the 48 % ReMOANers did not see it that way.Not surprising really because a great majority of them were business people who far from thinking about the country were thinking only of their own interests,as business people always do.In a way they are like politicians, pretend they are thinking about the good of their country when in reality they are only thinking of their self interest.
Another group of Re MOANERS were the younger voters, especially students who have grown up in an increasingly bewildering world of 'must have it now' and terrorism, and have no real knowledge of history. They wanted to be members of that 'exciting new club called Europe' instead of being in fuddy duddy old Britain. They probably equate it to being like a Club 18-30 thing. How exciting !
Another large percentage were British non-whites and others who despite being here over several generations, have never really felt it to be 'home',found it hard to be assimilated, and are 'doing very nicely, thank you' with what Britain can give them materially and security wise, and were frightened that leaving the EU could threaten all that. They think of themselves as being British. Only we know what it is like to feel British and I think they know and resent that.
Then John, there were others who chose to remain on the fence because they weren't sure and didn't want change in their stale, wearisome,shabby,downtrodden- by- Sproutland plodding existence.British undoubtedly, but with none of that old bulldog spirit left in them.

Nice of Europe in general to praise our Brexit victory. That is us being British though. I doubt whether any other country in the EU would be able to pull it off and leave like we have done. The reason of course is simply because they are European geographically and culturally. We might geographically be part of Europe but have never been European in outlook. I would say most of us can say I feel British, but I don't feel European.

Gulliver, like you I have always been against the EU and it's predecessors, I always believed that we should be on our own.
Since we joined the EEC in 1975, I can honestly say that I have never spoken to anyone who vote to join the EEC.
Makes me wonder how we did join.

I keep telling the people i meet who voted to stay (not that many), when they say the pound is falling, trade barriers etc, if we had stayed in the EU there would be bigger pain down the line when the EU goes those ladies pointy thing up. The politicians in Europe are desperately trying to hold it all together, but the big god will destroy it sooner or later , MONEY !!!, the european banks in Italy , Portugal , Spain are all heading for trouble, and Greece has not gone away, the rebirth of the money problem in Greece is only round the corner, kt

Over 27 countries have indicated that they wish to sign trade deals with the UK. If they are all signed great. There is only one down side that I can see, we have no MN to transport the goods between the countries involved.
In its heyday the MN contributed millions to the countries invisible earnings each month.
Anyone interested in starting up a shipping company?

As is rightly said England has never been a part of Europe and from early days has been hated by the French. Well Henry V and few others did stick it up them, so little wonder about that.

There was as you say a time when the Bulldog spirit ruled the land, WW2 is testament to that, but over time the younger generation and migrants know nothing of it.

It will take time to resolve all the problems associated with Britex and I am sure that for the majority of citizens the final outcome will be the best there is available.

Whilst there are many business people who are only concerned with share price and profits, there are thousands of small one who do care about their customers and the state of the nation.
They are the ones that will, by their persistence help to make the nation strong again.

Yes I may well have been called a fence sitter and a little skeptical about it all, but my concern is for the best for the nation. I am aware that it will take time to resolve all the issues and also that there are those, mainly in EU, who do not want the UK gravy train to stop giving to the 'fund'.

That is where I see the biggest hurdle for you, but I hope the great British people will stand tall and not give in to those who would see them undone on this matter.

So to the barricades and keep the Hun at bay.

Proof reading of this will be accepted Gulliver, thank you.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Who were the enemy 100 years ago, the two main ones were Germany and Turkey. Who were the enemy 75 years ago, Germany, Italy, most of France, most of the Slavic states. Germany has a big community of Turkish people so maybe it will be to her advantage to take in more when the time comes, which it is going to arrive very shortly. The mess we have today can be solely laid at the door of politicians who think they know it all, the very worse thing they could have done was arming all these factions. To arm soldiers of the 12 century with modern day armanents was and is stupidity in the extreme. This however will be covered up in other observations made by so called experts in the field. JWS John Maybe Biggest hurdle should be Highest hurdle, unless you are saying all those jumping are fat, Cheers JWS

Nice reply John and proofreader passed !

I do not agree with one of your statements ,highlighted above in blue by me.

Small businesses are businesses. The primary purposes of any business ,large or small is to make profits ,they are not in business because they care about the customer.Once upon a fairy tale maybe.
It is an absurd notion that you think 'They are the ones that will, by their persistence help to make the nation strong again.

Really? Really?......thousands of little businessess who were struggling long before the Brexit referendum and desperately voted to Remain because they realised the gravy train might not stop any more at their station ? Bless them ! ..... and in any case ,we ARE strong, the fifth richest nation in the world. BIG businesses , especially the global corporations ,no matter what we think of them ,will see to that.Brexit hardly makes a difference in their sphere.

John I don't mean any disrespect to you but I think you have been too long out in your wonderful vast country ,and still ,in your mind, think of the country you forsook as this tiny little island populated by disparate factions who no longer have the intelligence to make decisions and carry them out to fruition.
Hope you're keeping off those sharp points up there on that fence, you might be impaled for life.Never mind though,if ,the fence is where you undoubtedly feel safest !
    Best Regards

Having lived abroad for a number of years on two occasions I did find that the ex-pats who had spent 20/25 years in those locations always remembered it as they left it 20/25 years ago and no matter how much you explained that it had changed since their departure they didn't want to believe you, even if they had during that period spent vacations in the UK. I always gave myself a maximum of 4 years in any one location, although I was tempted to stay in Dubai longer, but amongst the first words my twins said was 'camel' and not cat or dog made me realise it was time to go home!
