Marian, This automated tube ride your on, Where does one exist in the world, I hope for your sake you are never evacuated from a tube train underground due to a terrorist attack or just a simple power cut, And you have no driver or guard aboard not a very nice experience believe me, The first thing you will encounter is about 18 inches of water deeper in places and rat infested. No need for any strike action Marian, Just give them what they earn simple Regards Terry.

Canada Montreal Metro Line 1 Green, Line 2 Orange and Line 5 Blue, opened in 1966 (Lines 1 and 2) and 1986 (Line 5), operates in ATO mode introduced since 1976. A member of staff closes the train doors (doors are usually opened automatically unless the driver requests otherwise) but does not normally drive the trains.
Canada Toronto Subway and RT is expected to have ATC/ATO implemented on the Yonge–University–Spadina Line and the Bloor–Danforth Line by 2016 and 2020 respectively. The Scarborough RT, which uses the same trains as the Vancouver SkyTrain and the Detroit People Mover, already runs on an ATC/ATO system.
Canada Vancouver SkyTrain is the longest fully automated rapid transit system in North America. Introduced in 1986, it consists of the Expo, Millenium, and Canada lines. When the Evergreen Line opens in 2016, SkyTrain will reclaim the title of the longest fully automated rapid transit network in the world.
United States Bay Area Rapid Transit in San Francisco opened in 1972. (A member of staff closes the train doors but does not normally drive the trains).
United States PATCO Speedline between Philadelphia and New Jersey operates in automated mode since 1969, but can be overridden by a staff member.
United States Washington Metro has an automated mode, where the driver is responsible for opening and closing of doors and of overriding the system. However, the system has been operating in manual mode since the June 2009 Washington Metro train collision, and plans are to operate in manual mode until newer railcars are delivered.[6]
United States New York City Subway BMT Canarsie Line L train began automatic train operation in early 2012 - Siemens CBTC.[7][8]
United States San Francisco Muni Metro light rail trains switch to automatic control while operating in the Market Street Subway and in the Twin Peaks Tunnel. The operator manages the doors in-station and pilots the vehicle when running aboveground.

marian.Your wasting your time.We all are.Terry is still living in the last century(early part) when britain was a major industrial power.We had a major car industry which was destroyed by the unions and weak management and now all out car companies are foreign owned.We had a shipbuilding industry that was the envy of the world which was destroyed by union demarcation practices.Now those workers are all out of work.
the tube drivers will be out of work one day and will miss the 50k a year.

talking through your hat again terry.How would the electric trains run with 18inches of water which would cover the electric rail or do you think that they are still steam like the unions

Ivan, You know your stuff alright, Marian we are talking about a lot more complex network of underground tube miles than you have stated, And much much more, Than could be run by any automated service sorry hun with or without the unions the London underground would never be run without train crews Regards Terry.

I have been logged on seconds I have not researched the London tube network I may be taking a chance on this but talking from experience obtained on the Mersey rail network which also has an underground system, Anyone who knows what an I.B.S. is Intermediate Block System,, Its a system that has replaced a once signal box area, Which I suspect the London tube has its fair share, It can only be of use when there is a driver or guard who understands what it is for and more important where they can be found on a rail network that's what a human can do that automation cant learn and remember {we still don't have a robot that can walk on 2 legs ?? }. No substitute for experience Terry.

marian.Your wasting your time.We all are.Terry is still living in the last century(early part) when britain was a major industrial power.We had a major car industry which was destroyed by the unions and weak management and now all out car companies are foreign owned.We had a shipbuilding industry that was the envy of the world which was destroyed by union demarcation practices.Now those workers are all out of work.
the tube drivers will be out of work one day and will miss the 50k a year.

talking through your hat again terry.How would the electric trains run with 18inches of water which would cover the electric rail or do you think that they are still steam like the unions
John ,John, Don't insult my intelligence I will let you work that one out for yourself, How do you suppose the power can be cut off 650 volts third rail and have one train on a network isolated yet have the rest of the system running ?????????? There are them who have done it and them who will wonder I am the latter Terry.
