Thanks for the replies. I think I will take up painting again, used to do it years ago. Have spent many hours walking around the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. I don't know if they still do it but the local Liverpool artists used to show their work at the Bluecoat Chambers.
I have been tracing my family history but came to a full stop with my great grandfather, he was held as a boy on the prison reform ship Akbar, moored in the Mersey.
Never been one for joining clubs, too much of a loner, but always looking for ways of keeping the brain and body active.

Tried Brian but above 100% focus goes - These are thumbnails can you have in normal size say 800 pixels wide?

Great ideas here for keeping active Louis. Think of something that you like and are good at (so long as it's legal!!!) and persevere.

I recall some advice I received some years ago on this subject. It was turn off the tele and get off your bum. I note you don't watch tv until 1800. Good on you. The fact that my dear lady wife suffers from asthma and emphsyma and can do very little re house chores that lot falls to me. So I'm busy most mornings until the basics are done then I go OUT. Every morning without fail; for a walk ,to the shops, to visit a mate, to the library. Joy has her hair done every Tuesday at 1100 so I go to the club for a pint and a chat whilst I wait.
Being a fair weather golfer I don't play in the Winter months but 9 holes on a Wednesday arvo keeps me in touch. Then of course there is my writing, one novella published and some short stories on the way.
Our main meal is lunch which Joy cooks however in the evening I experiment in the galley with supper, not always with success but still as long as it is edible who cares. Oh I forgot I do nap after lunch. Could it be exhaustion ?

#1... Louis if you are into crosswords, and the clue is a 5 letter word meaning boredom, the answer is usually ennui, another bit of useless information. However if you do crosswords with a monetary gain may be the answer you are looking for. Cheers JS

PS Rolf Harris liked painting and he never got bored. Look at all the characters he now has to pose for him. JS

Like to think of it as a sea anchor and quick to pull back into the boat. Cheers JS

If you live in the U.K. try your local council or other teaching organisations. They will most likely run free courses that will give you a qualification in a wide range of subjects and help you keep your brain ticking over.
At present, now fully retired, I am taking an Information and Technology course that leads to a recognised qualification in I.T. and it is costing me nothing.
