Boredom
As the vast majority of us have dropped anchor for the final time I would like to ask what you do to stop getting bored ?
Boredom for me can be expensive as I keep buying things from ebay that I never knew I needed. There is only so much pottering around you can do in a day, cutting the grass and walking the dogs. I gave up the booze about 10 years ago so the pub is out. I do not want to spend my days watching T.V. so only turn it on at 1800 to watch the news.
Any ideas, interesting web sites etc. most welcome.

The old site Electrician where I worked started me off on Golf six years ago when I retired , now due to arthritis I am on a buggy , but in two four hour a week we put the world to rights, reminis , he is ex RN Chief Tiff with a lot of Hong Kong in his past , and it is two days of badly played Golf a week , a lot of it taking a rise out of the serious players too .

Re: Boredom
Hi Louis
Try writing stories of your time at sea. get out your old discharge books and think about each trip you did. the characters you sailed with, all the daft adventures you had, bring back the memories.
All the good times, all the bad times, Then stick them on here, Thats what I did. Writing is easy with a computer, with Spell Checks and Grammar Checks, I could nt read and write when I was 11 years old, now I enjoy it. Excersise the brain as well as the body.Join a Fitness Gym, go and work out a couple of times a week, Get fit, you will live longer. I work out every day.
Find a cruise ship and do a two monther, that only leaves ten months to sort your self out.
. After doing all the jobs SHE has lined up for me, that is what I do, never Bored. life is for living.
Cheers
Brian

Re: Boredom
That is a good one John.
I do painting, used to do it at sea on long tanker voyages, use water colours,
What ever you do it is good, because it is yours. I always paint ship scenes.
Cheers
Brian.

Re: Boredom
Never got bored at sea, many hobbies mostly colouring black and white photographs for shipmates, even trusted with wedding photos, as with Brian, writing, doesn't have to be a book, just notes of your own life through the ages, surprising once started is difficult to stop, and if it turns into a book, even better, start small, write a little, you'll be surprised what triggers another memory and another page. Your shipmate's memories on here can trigger your own memories and that's what keeps this site going and growing

Re: Boredom
Hi Louis
Yes I know a bit about what you are on about here!
Not only since dropping the Anchor, but from retirement,i first found it very difficult to keep my mind alert and myself at ease!
Took me some time to settle in the new ways of life, but it came slowly!
These days like you I too walk the Dog,do gardening (when necessary LOL) as I am not a very keen Gardener, also took up Golf again (after a spell away) ,spend time of course on the Computer and this Moderating Job,does keep me busy online for quite a bit of my time,i love it though!
I also do all the cooking at home ,something I do like!
The Booze too is out for me since my Heart Attack in 1998,so I too don't frequent the Pubs any longer!
I like Walking around the place we live at,as there are many good walks and we have the lovely Lookouts very near us!
Can spend quite a lot of time down there just gazing out over the beautiful Mountains .
In the other spare time I find available I do a little bit of reading (however not much these days) as I find that the Eye strain of reading isn't doing any good !
At least on the Puter I can increase the Size of the text when I have to! LOL!
So its just a new way of lifestyle Louis that one has to get used to,not as easy for some I suppose as others!
Keep at it mate! As Capt says too, keep fit if you can,a workout is good but don't and I stress don't overdo it! At our ages too much exercise can be a strain on the Heart!
Cheers and enjoy your life as best you can!

Re: Boredom
Thankfully I am still fit and able, take no medication, so do three days a week as a volunteer at the local community health centre. But I also write, read and do odd jobs around the house. Still climb up trees to prune them and on the roof to clear the gutters. So far have only fallen off once. No pub as drink driving killed it all so drink at home. Try making some home brewed beer and get afew mates around to try it, take up photography even if it is only simple things such as flowers in the garden or the antics of the dog. If all fails join the local seniors centre, they put on some very good events also Probus clubs.

Happy daze John in Oz.
