Re: Another Malaysian Tragedy
I am not sure on that issue JS
There must be some International Law that excludes that Finders Keepers etc!
Surely it stays the property of the Airline Involved, and should be thus returned to them?
As said I don't really know!
Cheers

Re: Another Malaysian Tragedy
john to me this is in the class of looting the flight recorder was part of the plane and a very important part and belongs first to the airline and then to authorities to find out exactly what happened to the flight? we here by the press that bodies are being dragged around and looting going on it may be the collection of bodies and lots of body parts by mostly farmers and miners. sky news reporter totally denied that was going on as he is on the ground with them reporting. its a very sad day for the world when people would take pleasure in shooting an aeroplane down and trying to cover up who did what will we ever know the truth??jp

If the flight recorder off the previous downed and still not found airliner. was recovered it would be the duty of the finder of whatever nationality that includes Australian, to return to the rightful owners. Even as expected was found at sea would have to be declared as treasure trove the same as other things of value so found. The argument that the present black boxes found on so called Russian soil and returned to Russia does not hold valid. Suspect Putin although he may not be directly responsible and if in possession of such will be loath to admit it, as puts him in a very compromising position. Even though there are going to be many nationalities looking fo same, it still belongs legally to Malaysia and it is up to them to say what its future is and who examines for information to the cause of aircrafts disaster. I picked up over a mile of a seismic ships array floating off the West Coast of Australia. It was a hazard to navigation, I had this great heap of cable piled up on the after deck. I got the impression I should of left well alone and just left it where it was. It would of cost tens of thousands of dollars to replace . and I in my simple mind thought we may of got some reward for same. No one wanted to take as was too much bother to take away and store. It was only on my insistance that I had to pick up as was a danger to navigation that I got it removed. Whether anyone made anything off it I dont know, probably the ship that lost it wasnt concerned so the Insurance must have already paid up. We certainly only got a load of work getting it on board and off again in port. Moral is beware of what you pick up, ( especially if in skirts ) just joking. Cheers JS

Re: Another Malaysian Tragedy
As far as I can ascertain, the Black Boxes become the property of the Civil Aviation Authority in which country the plane is registered at the time of the accident and only Civil Aviation Authorities are allowed to decode them, this is to prevent airline operators, plane and engine manufacturers tampering with any evidence they may hold, which may or may not reflect badly on the aforementioned interested parties. Plane and engine manufacturers have to decode any sensitive commercial material in the presence of the Civil Aviation Authorities, these authorities can and do include CAA personnel from the countries of the plane and engine manufacturers as well as the country of registration. To me that seems fair and reasonable.
