    Default Medical Science Headlines.

Todays headlines in the papers and radio.DRUG DISCOVERY THAT CAN CURE ALZHEIMER'S.British scientists have discovered a drug that can treat Alzheimer's disease. How often do we see these headlines about various diseases such as Cancer. These headlines when first seen by many people must bring a glimmer of hope until we read the full story which then tells us that the drug has been tested on mice but will not be available for another 10 years.I myself think that until it is ready to be used on humans scientists should keep it to themselves.

Jim, sometimes it has been passed for use on patients, but the Government says We cannot afford to treat them the drugs are too expensive, a few cancer drugs are Very effective but you cannot have them. Most of our Drug companies are owned by foreigners. I think Smith Klein Beecham is owned by the Chinese.

In another ten years time the Scientists will have Forgotten what the formula is as they will have probably developed Alzeimers or Dementia.

    Jim,
I agree with your comments entirely but it must be far more worse for the sufferer when the story reads that it's ready for use by the general public but N.I.C.E refuse to allow its use because it is too costly. That really gets in my craw.

Brian what they are saying is that they are still far from a usable drug as the compound had serious side effects including weight loss and raised blood sugar,so it is a near possibility.

most of the experimental drugs are developed here in the US by the government and then the formula is sold to pharmacutical companies at very low premium . who in turn mass produce them for sale to the public . making $billions on research that they bought .

It's the poor mice i feel sorry for- these experimental drugs should be tested on the low life criminals banged up in our jails. In some parts of the US prisoners can volunteer to go on drug testing programmes and receive a sentence reduction or better penal conditions.

How come we can get pain killers to help lesson the pain but never a drug that cures the cause of the pain in the first place? Conclusion there is no profit in a cure but untold riches in selling the pain killers!

I have a couple of friends who believe that drug companies supress things like cancer cures for profit , I have over the last decade taken more than a passing interest in cancer research , despite all my insurer's cash and the NHS over £110,000 was spent trying to cure my wife , one drug was over £35,000. On its own . Because a lot of the breakthroughs are from academia , and a lot of the research independent , from research charities like cancer research ,I believe the international drug companies may be unscrupulous but I crefuse to believe they would supress breakthroughs . This new announcement regarding the continued production of protein stays off cell determination in the brains of mice because of chemical intervention is brilliant ,the life cycle and
Life expectancy of mice means that the research is done much quicker than chemically costing death row .prisoners . Any animal rights activists who don't like it can come and chat to me , but ten years is still optimistic from this breakthrough to a test product , never mind a marketBle one

They may do better using politicians for their experiments, most have little or no brain so would not feel any pain.
