Unionism was never very strong in the US except for the northern states . most of the rest are right to work states , with no real unionism ,and low pay . Reagan was just like Thatcher . he started the raid on the social security fund wich was brimming with $$$ at the time ,now its just a bunch of IOU,s the the government left in it , and they want too cut what social services that we have ,and put the blame on the ones that need it most ,while wall strreet and the banks that were bailed out with tax $$$ still gett multi million bonuses .have too stock up on ammo for the coming riots and anarchists . In reply to John #62, yes Oz is big but we have the capaicty to become bigger, however for that to occur the politiacl front must also change. Much of what business and others want to do to improve the country are very often stopped by the gov of the day. Let business run the show and things will improvr.
As to the unions, half of the current Labor party now in power are ex unionists. They talk the talk about the workers but do not walk the walk when it comes to the sharp end. But then why would they, nice job, good persk, big pension which they can take as soon as they have stood for 3 consecutive elections, nice if you can get it. The worker has to wait until 65 to get his pension.

As we both know there is going to be about 4 to 5,000,000 jobs created as peel holdings expands the Free port here in Seaforth over the next few years, I hope as you do anyone local who has the skills that are required in whatever capacity do come away with full time work especially the 1,000s of young men with family's who want the work which from what i see around me is a very large percentage. And lets hope the company feels the same, I will be down there with a banner or a white flag on there behalf. If one Romanian Pole or Bulgarian migrant is taken on for pittance wages. Our local community need and want these jobs there are not many of them hiding behind the curtains watching there neighbour going out to work as Cameron says it, Because there aren't that many of there neighbour's in work. The last 50 odd yrs we have endured Tory and Labour governments in this country, I know exactly what you mean by walk the walk and talk the talk all government ministers and M.P.s are guilty as sin of it that's why we are in the state we are in. Every working man has the right of representation in the workplace we were never denied it and like it or lump it if you are a member of a union you are in a much safer place than if you aren't Regards Terry.
