Before you demand compulsary voting have a look at the lot we have here in Oz because we have compulsary voting and believe me there are good and bad points for both versions. What happens is it is like a cattle yard on polling day where everyone lines up with a blank look on their mugs and just go through the routine of voting. Hence we have fewer parties contesting the elections and if a new one starts up the major two unite to make sure that they get rid of them. Over the last few years they have got rid of One Nation and the Democrats to just name two recent ones to fall by the wayside. At least over there in the UK there seems to be a few more choices. As for voting by people living overseas I fully agree that they should not be allowed. I think there is a lot of Greeks here that vote for Greek parties and look where they have ended up because of the lax retirement age there our lot used to make sure that they voted to keep it going then when they retired would move back to Greece and enjoy all the benifits as well as retaining the Oz pension. Bet there are a lot from the UK moved back there as well over the years. Personally it should be left to residents in that country to stuff it up as I know here that we do not need any assistance in stuffing it all up we are becoming real good at doing it by ourselves.
That's the way the mop flops.

My thanks to Brian for this site.

For once we agree Les, yes Katter is passionate about it and has some good common sence down to earth ideas, sadly that will not get him where he wants to go.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

John the one thing that both labour and libs have in common and that is neither one is any bloody good and both leaders are an embarassment to all voters. Bit like being on a sinking ship and all the lifeboats are full of hungry canabals. From what I can make out on posting here it is no different over there in the UK. Can we not doctor up reports from Mars saying that there are billions of voters up there and send the fecking lot up there to canvas votes. Could then give Iran billions of dollars to test out nuclear weapons on Mars.
That's the way the mop flops.

I agree with Ivan and others that only those resident in the country should be allowed to vote. We do have Australians living overseas who collect a postl ballot, which is fine if only away for a few months, but there are some away for afew years who claim the vote and in my opinion thta is wrong.
Les says we have compulsory voting, not exactly true. we live in a democracy and no one can force you to vote. Howvere it is comlusory to attend the polling station on polling day. we also get handed how to vote cards as we do not have the best system available, first past the post, so preferences means a dick haed who only gets 20% of the primary vote can win. Soem only go for the 'donkey' vote. That is just go 1,2,3 etc down the slip.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Okay I stuffed up we do not have compulsary voting here just as John says we are fined if we do not attend the polling booth to have our name crossed of to show we attended. Even if we are interestate where we do this as an absentee voter. Just wait until the next time I am accussed of being pendantic with my views. But quite willing to take the beam out of my own eye. To be told that if you do not attend a polling booth to register does not sound like democracy to me. But suppose we must delude ourselves that since we have handed control over to the politicians we have now become servile towards their needs and not the other way around. As said before hope that the up and coming generation has more intenstinal fortitude concerning this than we ever did because we sure have stuffed it up big time with inaction and handing control of our lives to a bunch of idiots.

Not stuffed up mate, just amde the same mistake that most do. I have actualy written to the Electoral Commision accusing them of false advertisng on this saying it should read 'compulsory attendance, not voting".
