To me it is only splitting hairs because if to escape being fined for none attendance at a polling booth is not compulsary voting because even if you do not put a cross on the paper but just getting your name crossed of is registering that you have voted in my book. Personally I would prefer the UK system of optional voting so that we are not all lined up like cattle to attend as it seems that takes away our freedom of choice. Just wonder how much more the Noallition will take away next time in.

They might not get much more choice than we do in the UK but at least they have the chance of another party to vote for and if the incumbent lot are so on the nose then all those people that do not usually vote suddenly turn out and vote for a minor party then that party could win in a landslide where as here they already know how the voting will turn out.

To do a quick explanation. If an area here is predominatly Liberal then Labour is just as likely not run a candidate for that area and vis versa. They call that choice.
That's the way the mop flops.

Sounds llike she only did it with her friends and does not have an enemy in the whole world. Wonder if she still has that itch between her toes.

I ,believing in freedom of speech , choice and the rest , was totally anti ID cards , for the good reason that I felt the government would screw up the whole thing . I have changed my mind , we all have a National health Number to get to a doctor , regardless of age , sex race creed etc. . . Why don't we have a simple biometric system based on the National Health number , renewable every five years , tied eventually to a passport and driving licence number . Then work on No ID , no doctor , No Hospital , No Social Security , no pension , no vote , Foreign nationals resident here , same system , charge for it ,let is show a work permit , showing their details , their status , passport number . I watch the UK version of passport control . They detain a shop full of Asians or Africans , charge them , tell them they are deporting them , cannot find passports or papers for them , so they bail them never to be seen again , because there is no detention space . We have to make the detention a place from hell , so the word spreads and they know no papers here , then no fun . I also keep hearing Americans , in media and banking jobs , do we need this , is there no Brit who can do those jobs ? . as an after thought pay G4S the equivalent of the social security money to jail the stateless persons , that would frighten them off , totally

Sounds great Rob. I still am against all identity cards and such like. Has made authority's to bloody lazy and now the onus is on the person to prove who he is. We had a campaign here years ago to introduce a Aussie card but it got defeated. Since then our photo identity driving licence has taken over that role to the extent that if you do not have or are to young to have a licence you are told to get a proof of identity from the RMA (who issue licences). We are now at the stage where even if you go into your local club they can ask for your licence to prove where you live. How many cards do you all carry around now and how many did we have on us when we where travelling around the world years ago. I think I only had my seamans card that stayed in the cabin. Freedom is just like our good times at sea. Fading memories.

Guess who the ones it will not affect? The ones they are after.
That's the way the mop flops.

    Just Checked the Wallet Les

    Driving licence
    Bus Pass
    European Health Card
    Membership card for the RNA
Membership card for a couple of other places
    Golf cup membership
    Debit Cards
    credit cards
    Hertz Gold card
    Avios card
    Coffee loyalty card
Bank managers card with his details

So I don't think an ID card will make much difference , If you break wind in public in the UK you will be on CCTV somewhere . I think too many post war films where the Gestapo would enter a French Coffee bar and arrest all the British spies and escaping POW s as well as the returning airmen by shouting " papers " coloured my views , we are already tagged from birth , so we have nothing to be frightened of , If it catches a few eastern Europeans , and Asians , And Africans , Brazilians and the odd paperless returning Ex pat , then so be it .

We need the detention deterrent though .

THINKS !!! If we rebuilt the City of Adelaide , rotting away somewhere in Scotland , put some big sails on it , maybe there is somewhere we could send all these stateless guys to ??? and provide jobs for seafarers . Might need to put an engine in it though , just to make it a proper ship !!!

Ron talking about old films. Do you recall the old movies where a yank would arrive and take out a wallet open it and there would be a long stream of cards unfold. We laughed at that then and now it is fact with us all now. I purposefully hide my driving licence in my wallet after a argument years ago. Walked into a club and was asked for identification and when I opened up my wallet he noticed my licence even when I told him that I did not have one he would not let me in unless I showed it to him. I know it was petty but it goes against the grain with me that anyone can demand that I prove who I am. I understand about illegals getting caught by using one but the facts are plain as day out here. It only takes a little money and we can purchase any identity card for anything in a matter of hours if you know where to go and the authorities know about it as it has been well documented on the TV. If that happens here you can be sure that it is happening there as well with many of them on welfare using more than one identity. Sorry to burst your bubble mate but it is only intended to make the honest ones feel secure when in fact it is a big problem to control. Another bloody political scam to make us feel that they where doing something about it.

If you are still active give volunteering a try ;it gets you out into the community and gives one a feeling of usefulness. A few hours, of your own choosing, can contribute to your well being and to that of others.
