    Default Introduction

    Guess it is de rigeur??

Went to Gravesend in January '72 so just a youngster when I see some of the other threads

Discharge book number R909138. Glasgow Pool. Started off on the Windsor castle as Tourist Class saloon boy, passed safely through Ropners, Everards, Blue Star, ACT and another couple of companies before being press ganged into BP when I was skint over Xmas of '74. Joined BP January '75 and joined first ship in March, Br. Pioneer. Made redundant along with everybody else in January '86 but at that time was in the North Sea on Iolair so it was a change of hat. Moved from there to Seillean when it was built for a few years then left when it boogered off to South America (I didn't have a Panamanian Cook's ticket and that was required). Couple of year on platforms, then seconded to Stasco as Catering Superintendant/Trainer. All in all 28 years on merchant ships, 25 of them on BP and Shell. Last one I visited was the LNG Bonny in dry dock in France. Now livingmostly and working in Nigeria.

Looking forward to browsing through these forums.

G'day Gordon and welcome to the site. We have something in common it would appear, tourist saloon Windsor Castle, I started there way back in 1960 when she was a new ship, you were on her closer to her end with UCL.

Good day to every one. I was about 15 in the late 1960s. I started work at that time, with an advertising agency that was located within a building near the main Sydney docks.
I spent my free time exploring the ships There were interstate and overseas cargo and passenger vessels.
I latter found a Job as deck cadet, but my father refused to let my go.
The love of ships has never left me .

Regards & and thank you all Allan Jones

G'day Allan and welcome to the site. If you were around the Sydney area then do you recall Swire the ships providor company? Mate of mine worked for them at that time, name of Campbell 'Bluey' Borland had sailed with him earlier on UCL before he came back to live.
    Happy daze John in Oz.
