Re: Northern Star, Windsor Castle, Pendennis Castle and S.A. VAAL
sailed with a steward on my first trip to sea, dec 81 to may 82, named Les Craig, the bloke never shut up about when he was on the pendennis or the windsor, the name VAAL rings a bell too, referred to himself as an old passy boat queen. from liverpool, short dumpy fella, funny as anything. was getting on a bit back then, no doubt passed away by now,

That was the Tranvaal Castle ,later sold and became the SA Vaal
the sold again to Carnival Cruise line sailed as the SS Festivale
Again sold to Dolphin Cruise Line and sailed on as the island Breeze
then on to Premier Cruise Line as the SS Big Red Boat III
The ship became The Big Red Boat for her final voyage to the scrapyard.in Alang

I was on the Windsor in Cape Town when the Transvaal came in on her maiden voyage. Some of the lads dubbed her the transvestite castle

Re: Northern Star, Windsor Castle, Pendennis Castle and S.A. VAAL
just noticed this post. I was ships photographer on the Vaal on several trips including the one with the P.E. incident. Went on to train as an R/0 and joined Maersk finally left the sea in 1981. Now living in Western Australia.

Re: Northern Star, Windsor Castle, Pendennis Castle and S.A. VAAL
I booked a cruise on the Festivale with the family in 1997. I remarked that she looked like the SA Vaal, wife and two sons , rubbish.
We got to Palma, walked from the bus to the ship, looked up at the stern, you could make out the letters that had been removed, SA VAAL. Family not best pleased, as I was correct.
Lovely ship to cruise on.
Regards
Vic

Where did he feel for the hairdresser, was it the darkroom?
