Help to locate Grandfathers ship

I am trying to find out what ship my grandfather was on during the Arctic Convoy. Sadly he passed away 9 years ago and my Mum has no recollection of his whereabouts during the war. He was in the merchant navy and his name was Geoffrey Allcott Evans. He came from Wellington, Telford, Shropshire.

My dream would be to have my Grandfathers medals (If I can obtain them all, as they went missing years ago) on the wall alongside mine.Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Certain you will be directed to his entitlement, not certain if they can be issued twice, but know for certain once you have the full list, others have donated the originals to museums etc and have had copies made for the family.

niel if you know your grandfathers service number i believe you can get copies of them but they are costly{about £40.00} each.jp

Sadly I dont know his service number. Do you know how I can find this out as I am more than willing to contact the medals office and pay for anything that I can obtain for my Grandad. Thank you for your prompt replies.

I hope that you will get some info soon !
In the meantime ,have you got his Seamans Record,if not they are available here!
You can order them online,this is just his Seamans Pouch which would contain possibly a little info,you can also order his CRS10 which would contain a lot more info and possible a Photograph of when he jioned!

I feel that there may be some confusion here!
As i read the first Post Neil is looking for Ships his Grandad served on during the Artic Concvoys!
Now unless there are two GA Evans born Shropshire,then the one i have given cannot be the one Neil seeks,as this person was only born in 1942,thus very unable to have served in the 1940's Convoys!
So sorry for any confusion Neil.
Possibly we will have to look futher into this!

Welcome Neil,

Firstly, you need to contact the Register of Shipping and Seamen in Cardiff to find out about his medal entitlement. I cannot see anything for him online but we know that many records of medals issued or claimed have not survived. If Cardiff do not have a surviving entitlement for him then they will tell you what you need to do. However, if medals have been issued in the past and there is a record of that then you will not be entitled to obtain replacements from them. In that instance a medal dealer or eBay would be a way to go to obtain them.

If there are no records, Cardiff will tell you that it is up to his next of kin to provide proof of his area and time qualification. To do that you will need his CRS 10 and the movement cards of the ships he served in. Re the CRS 10 [see post by Vernon] best obtained by visit to Kew.

If you could provide his date of birth then a more thorough search may be done for him.
