Hi Neil You say your Grandfather died 9 years ago. is this him. Geoffrey Aucott Evans - June 2004 Wrekin Shropshire -
date of birth 21/05/1916 (GRO Ref: 716/1 Reg.No 40B Entry 063 DOR 604). I this is incorrect there is another one born
1929. Hope it helps. As there is no information in the Merchant records could he have transferred to the Royal Navy.
    Good luck. Lilian

    Default updated info

    Hi Doc,

just thought i would give you an update, please see below reply from my uncle, when i asked for information about grandad:

Hi Neil. As far as I remember he was actually in the army but he was part of a gun team which was used to defend merchant ships in the convoys. I recall him saying that he has been through the Suez Canal on several occasions. He also told me that he spent the best part of a year defending a ferry between India and Ceylon (Sri Lanka now) during which time they only ever saw one enemy plane. I think that one of the ships he was on was sunk by the enemy. I dont know what regiment he was in. He was almost called up again for the Suez Conflict after WW2.

I remember my mum saying he was a gunner, could he have possibly been a DEMS gunner on an escort?

As always thabk you for your help

    Neil

    Hi Lillian

Yes thats Grandad. The following is the reply of a conversation I had earlier with my Uncle.

What are all the reference numbers on your post for??? Im still finding my feet about all this so I apologise if I come across as a bit dense.

    Many thanks
    Neil

Hi Neil. The reference I gave you is the registration of his death at the General Register Office Southport. As I found the right death here is the reference for his birth. Geoffrey Aucott Evans Quarter 2 1916 Madeley Shropshire 6a 1013. His Mothers surname was Aucott. You can order certificates from the GRO cost £9.25 which take about 7 days. Goof Luck. Lilian
