Hi everyone my name is James Diamond or Jim for short. I joined the NZ coaster Mamaku as the motorman during 1959 and it was a nightmare for me as I was violently seasick. The voyage lasted about 36 hours from Nelson to Onehunga and I never saw the mess room during that time. I did the return trip to Nelson and signed off but I didn't give it away but signed on the Matipo as a wiper and stayed for 18 months. This ship was half the size of the Mamaku. I spent the next 8 years on different ships of both the Anchor Shipping Company of Nelson and also the Union Steam-ship Co and thoroughly enjoyed it. I am only sorry that I left as now for me theres no going back, still I have some wonderful memories.
