Hello all,
What a site to come across.
I unfortunately lost my father, a Merchant Navy serviceman in the Second World War in June this year.
Dad served on the MV "Prometheus" and MV "Denbighshire" during the War and following the War plied the waters Fremantle to Singapore on "Gorgon" and "Charon".
He refused to apply for any Service medals from the war, even though he stated to us that he served proudly.
I think that the Merchant Navy is often "under recognised" in its importance. I think Dad felt that this was the case.
Anyway, since his passing, my mother has asked whether I could follow-up the possibility of accessing Dad's service medals.
I would greatly appreciate any advice regarding the protocols to follow or whether such access is possible seeing that Dad is now deceased.
Dad's name was Derek Cowie ( a Scot from Lossiemouth) and was always keen to tell his story of the gut-wrenching times.
Lest we forget.
But I hope that someone is able to point me in the right direction and help Mum out with an address and correct protocols to follow so that she can have that "little reminder" of Dad's service.
I would greatly appreciate any advice.
Thanks
Doug Cowie (Western Australia)

Welcome Doug,
There are one or two guys on here who have experience in dealing with MN medals and can help you.
Firstly, could you confirm his full name and date of birth please.
Regards
Hugh

Thanks for the quick reply
Hello Hugh,
My father's name was Derek George COWIE, born Lossiemouth 24/08/1921. I think he served from 1942 and initially out of Liverpool.
Best regards

Hello Doug,
He does have a medal file at Kew held in at this link:Medal listing of Cowie,... | The National Archives
This file can be downloaded for £3.36. If you are unsure of what it contains you can post back and we can decipher it for you. BT 395 is a listing of medals claimed and issued. So it would appear that on the face of it that the medal office have already issued them and therefore would not do so again unless special circumstances prevailed.
Regards
Hugh

Further to my last he has a seaman's pouch held at Kew in piece BT 372/566/91: Detecting your browser settings
His CRS 10 [service record from Jan, 1941] will be held in block at Kew in piece BT 382/392: Detecting your browser settings
Both of those files can be obtained online but I am afraid it can be expensive going down that route - best obtained by a visit to Kew or getting someone to visit on your behalf.
Regards
Hugh
