    Default hello folks

    Just a little about me
I am a member of the Gloucester branch of the World Ship Society since the branch was formed in October 1977.

Servered in the Royal Naval Auxiliary Service RNXS for 15 years until it was disbanded in 1994. I was enjoyed every minute and lernt everything about seamanship and navigation which i thought would be too difficult yet the training made it seem so easy.

After the service was disbanded we became the Maritime Volunteer service MVS for which i am now Deputy head of teh Wye Valley unit in Monmouth.

I enjoy researching shipping history and events and at the moment trying to fill in spaces in a large Spreadsheet of ships sunk world war 2.

I look forward to entering the forums and i hope i can help anyone who needs information

Hi David, well thats a huge task, i believe in WW1 the Germans sank even more merchant ships. but less tonnage. i also was in RNXS, Southend Branch, used to go out on exercise on HMS Thakeham, i believe an ex 112 foot inshore minesweeper, 2 Paxman diesels, an absolute pig to steer, but a real little ship. enjoyed the classroom lessons plotting mines, reciprical courses, was interesting. ,My interest is Merchant ships of both wars, have a database now of over 1000 wartime merchant ships, 455 Empire types, plus Oceans, Forts and Parks and Sams, also 200 WW1 Standard ships. best wishes, Tony W.

    Hi David.
Welcome to the site, I'm sure the lads and visitors will be calling on you to find various ships lost. I have a book listing all British merchant ships lost during 1939-49 so if there is anything you want let me know.
    Cheers Des
