Hi Graham, think i was on Oronsay 64 and was in squad with Spud. As you said a great guy very helpfull to anyone new at sea.Bosun was from my home town Methi, Wullie Phillips his younger brother sailed with orient line as well his name Sonny not sure if he was on Oronsay that trip or not. Graham, I was sure Spud was still on Oronsay when I left and that was April 1969. Maybe his aura just hung around for a long time he was an exceptional man.
I am just going through some old slides if I find any that may be of interest I will put them up somewhere. Were you on board when Hally Mills made the movie in Singapore?

Jim, Sonny spent quite some time as bosuns mate while Bill was bosun I think he lef for a time then came back cant place the dates though. He had the first cabin by the clock the storekeeper I think was Biddy he was in the other cabin next door.

My first trip to sea was on ORONSAY in 56. I worked as laundry boy until the ship left port and then was made commis waiter then lift boy, did the first trip round the world cruise then joined ORION for one trip,

I did my first trip on the Oronsay in 66. was deck boy with jimmy Dunster on the boat deck, Martin Fields was another DB. Owen Jones was from Wales and the Bosun was Bill Phillips and his brother was Bosuns Mate with Spud, I remember Jack the other BM very well nice guy

My mother sailed as a passenger between May and June, 1967. I remember stories of transiting the Suez canal right before it was closed for the 6 Day War.
I've been reading her journal and looking for photos of that trip. Were you on that trip?
