    Default Education

Because of my own poor education in religious schools it is only in later life that I now realise the vital importance of education and how it shapes all of our lives. Those who rule our world have always seen the huge benefits of education, by sending their son's and daughter's to private fee paying schools and colleges they have ensured their offspring will have a seat at the top table. Even if they are lacking in intelligence the contacts made in their journey will ensure a trouble free life. Take a look at politicians, board members of large corporations, newspaper owners and editors etc. the common factor is where they were educated.
Private fee paying education is only available to a minority who can afford it so the system never changes, 10% of the population own or control all the wealth of UK.
Our generation was fortunate, we had full employment and could have a comfortable lifestyle through work. My education began when I boarded my first ship, at 16 I could speak a foreign language. Dos cervezas, cuanto costa jiggy jig.

Not forgetting Quonta Costa Paranacha Louis. You’re right though it’s not what you know , but who you know , today however is not too bad , on the face of it. But the class system is still there and always will be to a great or lesser extent. Sometimes it is fashionable to come from the working side of the coin. Harold Wilson was one who played to the public with his Yorkshire accent , when in private it had a tendency to disappear and be replaced by his broad Oxford University one . Cheers JS

    Hi Louis.
On my first ship the Captain asked me if I would like to join with the apprentices to study for a second mate ticket, I had to tell him that my education was so poor it would be hopeless, now after meeting my wife so many years ago I wouldn't have turned him down she has really changed my life with her teachings.

#3 If she’s anything like mine Des , it was always just two words for the first couple of years and that was “ Behave Yourself “ .
As regards education I would think it was one of the few occupations that had no barriers to anyone getting a certificate if really wanted. I was always a bit overawed by certain public school types until up for my last cert. where he failed and I passed and after that I never accepted a persons birthright a right to hold a position not properly earned. When this questionable drop in manning came into force , I was on smaller ships and had no hesitation on promoting a leading hand with a bit of savvy to Bosun/ 2 mate, no cert. required and perfectly legal. I explained a rise in wages may not be in the wind as would be due to the owners, but he would get that discharge in his book for any future vacancies. The owners who I told after I had done , went along with it and as it happened did pay up, and promoted him further at a later date. In this case it was the other side of the coin it’s not who who you know but what you know. Cheers JS

I look around at some of the students of toady in wonder, I wonder how the world will keep going with them.
The degree of indigence is diametrically oppose to which social media site they use.
I have a nephew who is a teacher and his brother a school principal. Both think as I do.

When at the Uni we had a teacher training degree, easiest to get into.
I saw some of the students, mate they could not even cross the road in a straight line let alone teach.

Too many Left wing and WOKE types now.

More social matters than basics such as English language, maths even at basic levels and writing.
Of course now if they need the answer just go to Mr. Google, he will supply one.
May not be correct but is still an answer.

Without a decent education there is only one way up, besides cleaning windows that is, know the right people and you can go any where, even the biggest idiots, such as most polis.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

If the universitys are acting as a place of resurrection and strife, then close this so called higher education down as their occupants do not deserve the taxpayers and workers money to give them the chance of acting like prigs. If they can’t act in a civilised manner then vamoose and take your anger elsewhere where it will be more appreciated , find out where the instigators come from and rejoin them at the same time they are re- sited where they originated. Uni education nis not free, it must be paid for and here in Oz by the student.
Not when at uni but when they start work, the level of repayment depends on the wage.
But some of them should not be there in the first place, better off doing a vocational course and become useful.

But most of our polis come from Uni.
They begin by joining the young brigade of the party they like.
Then after uni get a job as a staffer to a poli, from there a position as a poli.
So with no work experience they run the country!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Happy daze John in Oz.

My daughter when she left school at 16 left with 5 O levels . I wanted her to stay on until she got her A levels. She wanted to spread her wings as a fashion buyer. She spent 2 years working for a big store. During that time she saw uni graduates going over her head. So she packed it in went and got 2 A levels which was required for uni entrance . Got her honours degree in B. Educ. Her husband got his Ph.D . During their Uni time they were strong socialists , 2 years in the real world they were just the opposite. However the Uni time going in as a mature student who had been in the work force was free at that time. I believe that the Universitys are a breeding ground for students who have strong political views which are advanced by their left leaning tutors , breeding grounds of disaffection such as swamps and bogs of morass should be drained and fumigated as they are a danger to humanity and health , when you see the riotous behaviour displayed on film by the media. Well well JS, apart from us both going to S.Shields, having the same initials, our daughters both have B of Ed degrees. Mine went into education and got a Masters, finishing up as Dep.Head, and moving on to head up teacher training at Northumbria Uni. She is now retired (early) and does consultancy work for Dept of Education. The Goverment in its wisdom, got rid of many civil servants in ministries,to save money, but had then to hire consultants at vast cost, to fill in. OK for some.

Mine went up to Scotland to teach as her husband with the Ph.d worked for BP at their place near Edinburgh. He was into plastics and believe he did his thesis on such for a degree , always said to me if could discover a method of obliterating such he would be a millionaire overnight. However through ill health he had to retire think he was only in his late thirty’s then. They are still both with us and came back to Harrogate to live , now live in Knaresborough . She gave up full time teaching and has recently retired from part time also. Do you remember John Eggleston a friend of his a member of this site informed me a few years ago that he had died. Think he went with Chapmans the same time as Charlie Briggs bumped into both of them think they were on the old Geneton in BA in 1954. It’s amazing how one can go back in the years and find sometimes who is still alive and kicking. Not so good hearing of those who departed earlier though. Two unforgettable characters at Prince Edward Road were Atkinson and Atkins . Bumped into in various pubs in Shields with Atkinson who didn’t apparently stay at sea very long . Similar with Atkins heard on the grapevine he too chose to go on deck , but before completion of Indentures. Can’t remember you though. Cheers anyway perhaps my ailing memory might recover but I doubt. Thanks for your reply… JWS Just to differentiate the initials unless of course your a William also ?
