Re: Different road rules
Johnno. When I went to Oz in 1986 and spent 6 months of the year there for 13 years, I bought a Mitsubisi Campervan, I had driven for twenty years automatic transmission cars. Here I was, getting ready to pick it up at the dealership in Cairns, Queensland, capital. of the deep North. A manual transmission, stick shift on the steering column, right hand side drive on the left side of the road and dirt track or a single strip of Bitumen with a packed dirt strip either side, and Roadtrains. Roadtrains being oversized body and power system truck cabs hauling three oversized doble decker trailers of live stock. Combined about 200 feet doing 80 miles and hour and owning the single strip of of bitumen, yet still blowing up a cloud of dust that took about 10 mins to settle. this meant move off of to the far side of the dirt road, stop, don't move until the dust settle in case there are two of them.
I hate driving and both my wives loved it. Except in Oz and the UK.. I had to do the driving there. And guess what, I'm stuck with a stick shift now.
Lucky thing was the auto dealer explained what to do if we could see a roadtrain. Driving in Oz was not for the faint of heart.
So Johnno, remember I am an honorary "Banana Bender" and Queensland became my second home, and I loved it..
Cheers, Rodney
