In 2007 one of my daughters moved to Germany, so I bought a second hand set of wheels and fitted winter tyres, as we always
visited in December before Christmas, I also bought a set of Michelins easy grips which are like snow chains but made from Kevlar, very easy to fit, and there's no immediate need to take them off if you leave snowed roads. My car was a rear wheel drive BMW which are notoriously bad in the snow.
I change to my winter wheels once ambient temps start to run at 7c. I have never yet had to use my Michelin easy grips and have driven in some horrendous conditions. I drove from North Germany in the very bad winter of 2012 to Ijmuiden (Amsterdam) without issue; took me 9 hours non stop, apart from the odd jam at crash scenes.
I tried a set of Michelin all season tyres and found them very good all year round but was let down by them starting to split when not very old, sent back to Michelin over a year ago, never heard any more.
There are several manufactures making similar products, well worth a look.

#16, Hi John, No here in Ontario we don't use chains on the cars, just good snow tires. In Quebec snow tires are mandatory from November on. In British Columbia transports need them going through the mountains and the highways dept will light up signs telling the drivers to chain up when it gets too bad. Towing gets very expensive if you get stuck....In BC tow truck drivers hate those tire socks, figure they are useless in deep snow and ice....

How deep is deep Stan, I know you get it very very deep snow out there, but my snow socks have got me through 12 inch snow in UK, in Switzerland snow tyres couldn't get me through 12 inches of snow. Snow socks tend to act like skis on deep snow, but that's just my experience, others may have different experiences. I know some AA and RAC recovery drivers carry them and put them on their own vehicles when towing others out of snow drifts, they call them their secret weapon, sure beat the hell out of chains for convenience and ease of application on/off

I wasn't thinking of buying an electric car but how would sea water get in the battery?

Yep Stan i too just bought 2 new Gel Bateries , German made and they are costly but will last a lot longer if looked after, the Guy said to keep them on the Charger all the time when not in use, cannot over charge with the two Chargers i have .

#19 Hi Ivan , cant even put my socks on let alone on a buggy. Had it out yesterday for a trial run and flat out about 10 kmh. dreading going into traffic and getting caught up in the souped up ones on the pavement jousting with their walking sticks which I have yet to get. However I do have a ceremonial Sword. JS

WE had a lady in our town who had one of them.
She often travelled at about 15klm which is 5 above the allowed speed fpr such vehicles.
Thankfully she had a very large long stick on the bag with a pennant on it, see that and get out of the way.

Here in Victoria the state gov has put a tax per kilometer on all EV in the state.
Only 2.8cents per kilometer, so if I do a 500 kilometer round trip it will cost me about twice what I would pay for Diesel.
But they tell us EV are so cheap to run!!!!!!!!!!!!
