Graham, There are a hell of a lot of answers to this does the answer have to be a nautical theme ?

No Terry.There is no theme as such,except in the question! -'Correct dosages for old sailors'.As described in my previous post it is simply an anagram of the word 'dosages' -which is SEA DOGS.The first word 'Correct' is another way of telling you to change the word 'dosage to another (ie an anagram)and you can get' sea dogs' which has (3 and 4 letters in it ,and then of course it is another word for old sailors in the clue. It is after all a cryptic clue and not a question about anything specific.
But you gave your brain a good work out and came out with some good possibilities,only they weren't of course anagrams for 'dosages' !
They are after all cryptic crossword clues and for most people as I stated in a previous post incomprehensible to many people,but if you give it time to learn how to do them,before long you'll be doing The Times Daily Cryptic one !
But I don't think I'd better put any more cryptic clues up-it takes too long to explain the answers!

Ah,that's deep Tom...Personally ,upon being made redundant ,calling it a day,and thus ending my sea career,I found it was daunting leaving the comparative sane routine 'madness' of the life at sea and entering an unorganised civilian life populated by thousands of unknown and variously,often unpredictable flawed characters. Yes,we had flawed characters at sea but on the whole we knew who they were,what they were like and how likely they might react to your comment or actions. Not so today in civvy street where one can lose one's life instantly in a random knife attack when passing someone on the street...

From the age of about 48 I started counting the days to retirement , there comes the year when you see no future to long separations in a fast declining profession and you were caught between the devil and the deep blue sea. The deep blue sea was the only job from leaving school , discounting a butcher boy , that you knew. At 48 that was in 1985 and the writing had been on the wall long before this. The seagoing industry as applied to British Shipping had started its decline about 1970. The only way out for me at least was to go elsewhere. It was one hell of a jump into space at the age of 54 to emigrate to a different country with very little money , no job, and start from scratch again. But as I say Australia proved to be tops for me and suppose many others as well, and have no regrets. I received no handouts and didn’t expect any , to survive one had to work, but when you worked you were paid correctly. Life is never easy unless you are born into money , but Australia had a damn sight more opportunity’s than the UK at the time. Cheers JS.

as for walking into danger on the very streets we grew up in, i always make sure to take my wife along, so she can scream for the police, and if that fails she can knock f**K out of them.

I don't do that crossword John.Far too time-consuming,and I'm not as clever as you think-certainly not an Oracle like you and others. I can never fathom out Times crossword readers who say they finished it in six minutes,or whatever !

It takes me six minutes to compose my ragbag brain before I even pick up a pen.It's like anything else in life-you've got to be in the mood!
I do the daily 5 Clue Cryptic X-word in the 'i' newspaper-just while I'm eatin'me'Weeties,which takes about 15 minutes I guess. That's where the two cryptic clues that I put in this thread came from.They just happened to have a nautical flavour.Reader.gif
