There have been a number of reasons given for his wanting Benny off, everything from too sugestive to being a bad influence on the young.
The real reason I doubt we will ever know, but there have been inferences that he is very anti gay.
I believe he died lonely and sad in Southampton a good few years back.

My ex brother in law was fairly senior in the Department of Health. I remember him saying that every time a government or minister changed the ONLY thing that actually changed was the door signs and letterheads.
