Okay your tools of your trade while at sea, Cappy , trust you don't mind but I bet you wish you had had a spud peeler like this one. This has to be the GT version of manual spud peelers.€2.50 from IKEA, come lads get your rusty old tools out.20180327_113659.jpg

#100. Gully I was in all day for orals, and as the examiner had been a pilot at one time tended to dwell on ships in harbours and going through locks . With models on the table h had me coming off the wall swinging and making and entering the lock. He finally said I spent 20years piloting ships and never seen a ship come off the Quay like that However he said in principle you are correct and I can’t fail you. I had wires and ropes going on all directions. Today you wouldn’t have the manpower to do it on any case. At 1700 hours finally got to the deviascope which had previous practice of a total of half an hour at the College. He left the room whilst I did it the tentative and short way. Came back in and literally threw the pink slip at me. I sailed on that pink slip a couple of months before having the time to collect certificate at the m.m.o. In Newcastle. 40 years later they clip it like an old passport and give you a piece of cardboard to replace what was one a much sought after document. In fact if right there are about 5 different grades of master. Makes one wonder about the maritime world of today. JWS

Lew, We can all visualize Cappy on the boat deck with his favorite peeling knife sat on a galvanized bucket sack of spuds one side and a bloody big pan of water on the other, Knotted hanky complaining of the heat in the galley life,s a bitch. But then he would have been more than welcome to my lookout stint on the wing of the bridge up in the North sea around November. Terry.

#107.... for those who can’t visualise, Cappy told me he modelled for the artist who did Oour Wullie the cartoon in the Scots paper of years ago sitting on the bucket. Got well paid for it as well. Bit of advertising might bring on some more work Cappy. Know you told me in confidence, but work is work. JS.

####well ted i sure would have changed your wing of the bridge lookout ........for a night sail i had off the west coast of scotland in a 36 ft sailing yacht blowing force 8 gusting nine....with a woman skipper with an astro masters yacht certificate ........why yer bugger man we eat were tatties....skins and all ........mind ted did do a 12 to four on a proper old tramp up from ozz and jeez it was honestly the best job i ever had .......apart from galley boy ....stood watches wit me granda second mate at that time possibly the year you were born 12 to 4 down to london and back but i was ten and 11 years old ......but never had any real certificates apart from competent crew yachts ........life boat ticket B OT.....and a ticket to ride ....... oops and me own 30 footer ........but of course was never a proper sailor .........not meant in any sense of nastiness just putting my CV on the sea in general
