#100. Gully I was in all day for orals, and as the examiner had been a pilot at one time tended to dwell on ships in harbours and going through locks . With models on the table h had me coming off the wall swinging and making and entering the lock. He finally said I spent 20years piloting ships and never seen a ship come off the Quay like that However he said in principle you are correct and I can’t fail you. I had wires and ropes going on all directions. Today you wouldn’t have the manpower to do it on any case. At 1700 hours finally got to the deviascope which had previous practice of a total of half an hour at the College. He left the room whilst I did it the tentative and short way. Came back in and literally threw the pink slip at me. I sailed on that pink slip a couple of months before having the time to collect certificate at the m.m.o. In Newcastle. 40 years later they clip it like an old passport and give you a piece of cardboard to replace what was one a much sought after document. In fact if right there are about 5 different grades of master. Makes one wonder about the maritime world of today. JWS
Lew, We can all visualize Cappy on the boat deck with his favorite peeling knife sat on a galvanized bucket sack of spuds one side and a bloody big pan of water on the other, Knotted hanky complaining of the heat in the galley life,s a bitch. #107.... for those who can’t visualise, Cappy told me he modelled for the artist who did Oour Wullie the cartoon in the Scots paper of years ago sitting on the bucket. Got well paid for it as well. Bit of advertising might bring on some more work Cappy. Know you told me in confidence, but work is work. JS.
