Re: The Legend of Dan Donnelly: Ireland’s Unbeaten Heavyweight Champion
I used to box for the Bolton Lads Club. we went to different towns to fight.
We didn't get paid but we got a present instead , maybe a book or similar and both lads got the same.
I was in London and due to fight a lad from Chingford in Essex.
He was slightly bigger than me, So I said to him, "This is daft, we go out there and knock seven bells out of each other, they all enjoy it and all we get is a book.
so why not go out there and dance around and not batter each other, "
"What a good idea " he says. .
So the Bell goes and I went to him and battered him unexpectedly and he was lying on the canvass for the Ten.
I was the winner with a knock out.
He was not amused and accused me of cheating. So I said "What's the problem? the fight was over in 15 seconds, it could have lasted the five rounds." Much easier and quicker that way." he still was not convinced.
Last time they put me in with a lad near twice my size, He hit me so hard my Granny felt it 20 miles away. and broke my nose.
I never fought again. a mugs game.
Brian.

Re: The Legend of Dan Donnelly: Ireland’s Unbeaten Heavyweight Champion
Brian I got my nose broken and I wasn't even in a fight, just trying to stop one and getting in the way. The second time got broken was going down the ladders on my nose in the after pump room in N.Z. Thought I could Hold my breath and get down and shut a leaking valve, I couldn't, good job I got on well with the Chinese crew they saw and pulled me out. My nose is not what it used to be. Doesn't make much difference now as other parts Of the body catching up and overtaking. Cheers JWS

Re: The Legend of Dan Donnelly: Ireland’s Unbeaten Heavyweight Champion
As I had told Dennis quite some time ago I too Boxed for Harmony Gold Mines Team, had quite a few Fights and was doing quite well. I then ran into a Guy in one bout called Cilliers who had been Boxing a lot longer than me,so to say the least got I peppered some in that one!
He later turned pro and did well ,but I must say that was in my short career the worst Fight I had been in,really sore for about 3 days after! Mugs game really! LOL

Little wonder Den, he passed long before us about two hundred years ago so he never had the joy of tasting your almost world famous Tab Nabs.

True John,
If he had, he would have been even stronger.
